• Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

How much would you guys estimate the value of an early 80's set neck Destroyer II with dots, no binding on the neck, Kahler trem, oversprayed black (it was originally cherry burst on flame maple). I just picked one up and have to place a value on it so I know what to ask when it comes time to sell. It has no breaks and most of the parts are stock.

Thanks!

Is this the same Jim Shine from Oxford Maine?
If so,..How's it goin' Jim?..This is Mark from Shapleigh! Well, before I started collecting vintage Deans I original collected early Ibanez's. I sounds like you have the earliest version of the Destroyer II which had only body binding and no neck or head stock binding. I would bet that it's some where between an`80 and`83 model at the lastest. By `83,`84 they added the neck and body binding, block inlays and gold hardwear. Another way you can tell if it's one of the earliest one's is if it has a translucent or soild finish on the back of the neck and body. The early ones had a translucent finish and some actually had mahogany bodys and not basswood like the later ones. Obviously the Khaler trem is after market. Too bad it was painted black over the flametop! The earlier Destroyer II's had much nicer flame tops than the`83,`84 models! I would say if it was all original it would probally be worth about $450. to $600. but with all the changes I would say only about half that ($250. to $350.)

Those things are worth that much? Damn! There was a nice candy apple red on for $175 at my local Music-Go-Round not too long ago. Guess I'll have to go see if they still have it.

Hey Mark! Yeah, its me! This guitar is definately Mahogany (I can see raw wood in the Kahler route) with a maple veneer (it may even be veneered on both sides). The original finish is still under the black paint and I am thinking I might be able to remove the overspray and salvage the original finish. Yes, you are right on about the tremolo. I removed the trem and see evidence that it was a stop tail/tune-o-matic job doweled before the overspray. On the headstock edge there is s huge chunck of black chipped down to the original transparent red color. It is definately see through up there. Now I have to decide to try and save the original finish and be able to see the plugged bridge/stop tail holes.

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

Most setneck Destroyers depending on condition usually sell for $350-$600. Mine has body and neck binding, flametop and is a 1983 model. Block inlays too. It's in near mint condition and I got it for around $525 but was well worth it. They balance really well and those Super 58 neck pickups give you an instant Dave Murray sound.

I've never seen a setneck version with dot inlays and not neck bindings.

Jim i picked up one black gold Hardware with binding & block inlays & an edge trem (OFR type) basically the same as phil collens except had the edge trem instead of Kahler for $350. i did sell it 2 weeks later for $500+, someone saw it at the place i was having the frets levelled & crowned at & he made me an offer. I honestly never even got a chance to really play it.

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

Greg,.. The candy apple red Destroyer II you speak of is the lower line model Ibanez made with the bolt on neck, basswood body and chrome hardware. They also came in blue and black and I had one that had only neck binding, no body or headstock, but I don't think they all came w/ neck binding. These aren't bad guitars but unforunately they aren't getting what the earlier setnet Destroyer II's are. Depending on condition it's probally worth about $150. to $250. the way the market is now for them.
Hey J2379,..Sounds like you had to Phil Collen model DT555 model! I would have held on to it! I'm sure those are going for more than $500. now! They actually made two diffrent verions of that model. The earliest one had a cheap fulcrum type tremelo with no locknut and the one you had, had the early version of the Ibanez edge trem called "the Hard Rocker Pro trem" this had a Khaler type lock nut. I've never seen a DT555 just like Phil's with a stock Khaler!, but that doen't mean that you couldn't get one like that! I once owed a bolt on neck Iceman the had a Khaler trem on it that was stock!

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

I alwasy wished that Ibanez would have made a real Phil Collen model with the Kahler, and the DiMarzio super distortions. They made them for him, and then they turn around and call the DT555 the Phil Collen model.......Now thats a jip..........

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

Ibanez never officially called the DT555 the Phil Collen model although he was in the ads for the guitar. A stock Kahler would have been cool. The version with the more vintage type tremelo was a bolt on model called the DT155 or something like that. The 555 was set neck.

I used to have both the Ibanez Vee and original Destroyer in the Korina finish! Yeah, they were Ash with a set maple neck. Very cool copy of the real thing! Thus the law suit! Wish I still had them but I love my original Dean Vee's and Explorers more!

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

I have removed about a 6 x 3 inch area of finish and it looks good underneath so far. Hopefully I don't find any filled holes or anything (other than the Kahler mod). If all goes well, it will be back to its original finish, but it may take some time to get there. It took about an hour to do that small area.

Either way it goes, I am not too worried. I got it in a load of other items, which so far appear will end up putting me into the Destroyer for free.

Re: Ibanez Set Neck Destroyer Questions

I cleaned some of the back down and it appears that this isn't a cherry burst, but actually a transparent cherry all over with mahogany center and a maple veneered yop and back. I don't see much figuring in the small area I cleaned so far, but maybe the top will be a little nicer.

yep that sounds like it lock behind the nut & the block inlays had the triangle in them. I only bought i always wanted a nice explorer & thought it was a good deal. I think the older Ibanez setnecks are great guitars, ide still love an nice korina lawsuit V & explorer, i know they were ash but.
