• Ibanez question (SHOCK AND AWE!)

Considering temporarily lifting my ban on Ibanez products but I wanna make sure I'm not getting hosed (yeah, I know, it's still an overpriced import and anything over $500 is getting hosed )

So, what are the general price ranges for the old original Ibenhad JEMs (green, yellow, and pink) with the pyramid inlays (paper under plastic) and monkey grip, lion's claw, colored pickups, etc etc ? I went through the Completed Items listings but didn't really get a good average as there was only two pink ones - one sold for $1200+ (mint), the other lay dead in the road (no bids) at $850 with case in good condition with Vai's signature, and a Floral that closed at under $900 (sold). I know very few of these were signed by Vai when they left the factory, and these should bring more than an unsigned one.

I know Vai is more known for the Green one, so those appear to be going high in the Current listings, and the Yellow ones up there now are doing ok pricewise, but I don't know how many have met Reserve.

Is $850 too much for an original '88 JEM?

why don't you buy and rg and do the mods yourself? you can buy an rg for like $250 used. here is a link to a bunch of ibanez mods:

this site is awesome, teaches you how to route the moneygrip handle, inlay the pyramids, etc.

Cuz I got enough work to do without getting into full-on luthiery just yet

Thanks for the replies - I know these things seemed to be selling for $1500+ about a year ago

I'm definitely in shock right now and think I need to take a temporary leave of absence from the board.

the pink and yellow jems can go anywhere from $550-700 depending on condition....ive seen a black 7p for $250, but it needed tons of work.....the green jems are a lot more since they are sorta collectable

Try asking the people over at jemsite.com. They seem to be the experts on JEMS, collectables and players. On a side note, I saw on Ibanez's site that they are reissuing the floral print JEM with original specs for its 15th anniversary. Interesting.

Asking the people on jemsite about a jem is like asking the people here about a Rhoads

I bought my shocking pink one for $650. I've seen DSY's go for about the same. The green one's a limited with the vai sig. I personally wouldn't pay over $600 for one.

The reason why the LNG's-loch ness greens are so high are because there were only 777 of them produced hence the title Jem777LNG. The pinks are known as SK-shocking pink and the yellows are DY-desert yellow, not for sure on exactly how many of those were produced, the main problem with the pinks were fading lighter pink, if your gonna get a Jem either the LNG, BFP-blue floral print or the PBK-black with white pyramid inlays, those are the real cream of the crops, to me the best Jem ever made was the BFP-only produced 2 years. Average price for the best ones-$900-$1500. Yeah I know blah blah blah it's only because I started out on Ibanez but then found Jacksons. Need I say more.

So, should I go on to the jemsite and ask about what kind of price I should pay for a Rhoads?

Re: Ibanez question (SHOCK AND AWE!)

I would say for the Desert Yellow and Shocking Pink models $500-800 is normal. Anything more than that, and it better be in mint or near mint condition. The Floral pattern is slightly more probably $600-900 for a decent one. I sold my 777DY's for about $700 each and they were in very good shape.

The Blue Floral pattern with the maple vine neck is a great guitar. I've seen these go for $900-1200 in good shape. The cool thing about the BFP is that its rear routed, so the pickups are direct mounted, whereas most of the other models have front routes.

Check out Ibanez Rules for some nice used ones. He takes very good care of the stuff he gets and cleans and sets them up to perfection. You might also check the jemsite classifieds too.
