• DAMN! those custom wound EVH dimarzio's are great!

I got a set last night from a tech for $250 and the bridge unit is killer! i put them in my wolfgang standard, it has VH's old tone with more heat! the neck one is real fat but clear and articulate! great work dimarzio! these sound very different from the stock wolf pups?
anyone know why

They probably sound like (or are) the Dimarzio pickups put in the Music Man Axis, which are the Dimarzio's originally designed with Eddie back when EB/MM was building the EVH. I have a few Axi (Axises? Axem?), and I've owned a Wolfie, and the Peavey wasn't as warm, articulate or harmonically rich sounding as the Axi... Basically, I think the Wolfie pups - though developed later - are a step DOWN from the pickups he designed for his Music Man signature guitar...

$250 for a set?!? For a lot less money, you could have just picked up a DiMarzio Norton for the neck and a Tone Zone for the bridge... as that's what the EVH pups basically are.

Also, Wolfgang pups have a more scooped mid range.

Well.... There close but not exact. These EBMM pickups are in fact made by Dimarzio and they do fetch High bucks. I have never ever seen a pair go for less (and it is only about once a year that they do turn up on ebay) than $200.

They are a bit hotter than the Tone Zone and Norton.

I have a pair in my Wolfgang and They sound a bit more crunchy and certainly hotter than the wolfgang originals.. Harmonmics ring off nicer in my opinion.

Glad you like them too RVM.

I have had all the above mentioned pickups. The EVH customs from the early 90's EBMM's are the best Dimarzio has ever made. I can't agree that they are just renamed stock Norton and Tone Zone Dimarzio pickups. I have owned many guitars with Nortons and Tone Zones and the EVH Customs smoked them. I have seen 2 sets sell in the last year. 1 set went for $250.00 on a Buy Now and the other went for $285.00 with around 20 bids. They rock for sure. Congratz..

Chris, finding a set alone is a great deal. I would guess that most if not all early EBMM owners keep their stock pickups so when they do come up for sale as a set without a guitar attached to them is pretty rare for sure.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">the tone zone is really a different beast altogether though? the EVH dimarzio does not have as much low end and is much cleaner/crisper than the TZ.
the TZ is the closest to it,but still NOT THE SAME
trust me if a TZ had the same sound i would have
just used it,and as far as the neck pup,the air norton is very close, and would have done the job,but try finding someone selling these EVH dimarzio's seperate

I got lucky,a tech i know pulled a set from a newer axis(same pups!)for a customer for a set of virtual paf's. his loss! LOL!!!!
$250 is considered a bargin with these pups

Wow, I didn't realize that price was a bargain for those pups. I got my chrome EMG anniversary set for less than that, but as long as you're happy, that's cool. I'd personally go with the TZ/Norton combo and be happy getting close enough.
