• opinion wanted....

here's the latest in the sully created guitars. i've got some neck profiling to do, and i was thinking about painting the headstock black. the neck is raw right now (i couldn't wait to string it up), so it naturally would be darker after doing the doc dryer approved espresso grounds and some danish oil, but i think that the head would be too light with the gold tuners. i want to keep the hardware the same color scheme, so if ya wouldn't mind lookin at the pic and tell me your thoughts: black headstock or no?

here's one with the hardware on:

and another before assembly:

TIA,

Black with a gold Sully logo and that hardware would be perfect.

How 'bout matching purple-burst headstock with the gold hardware? maybe with a figured maple veneer to sorta match the body's figure

If you can't do the matching purple-burst, I think the black would look cool.

Another vote for the purple burst, I think it would look great matching the darker color scheme of the horns

well if its not too late sully, what i would do is do a vintage tint to the headstock and go with that....i wouldnt do that mess with coffee grounds, do it right with amber tinted lacquer

actually, what i would do is apply a curly maple cap on the headstock and stain that to match the body....im not sure how advanced or what tools you have

Sully,
That can be the 1st Kidd Havok guitar
I would leave it raw, black logo outline in gold with gold hardware and a black string retianer if needed.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">not too late at all, doug, i haven't touched the neck yet! i've got a vintage tint neck (it's the greatest neck on the planet.... no, really.), and while i really like the vintage tint, it didn't look too hot against the purple. (this was the maple neck i originally tried putting on the guitar.)

i do have the ability to put a flamed veneer on it and dye it purple, so that's what my first attempt will be. what i'll wind up doing is getting some veneer, dying it, and if the color matches, i'll cut another veneer to fit and do it again.

DM, i'm totally with ya on the natural, see?

i just think that it looks odd with the gold tuners... that even if i tint the maple (other than black or purple), it will look too bare with the gold tuners.

thanks for the feedback so far, keep it comin!

I think Doug has a good idea Sully; bear
in mind the maple board was contributing to the brightness effect. That neck with its rosewood board and a darker amber tint might be just what you want. I agree that a black Strat headstock on a Strat body just screams "Hondo"! I'd do anything but that. The purple flame veneer sounds cool too, but try the amber
tint with the rosewood board first; I think it won't be nearly as bright as it seemed with the maple board reflecting a
lot more light. Worst case, you do the purple flame veneer anyway, right?

It's looking damn good, man!

I dont know about a black headstock on that Sully? To me it would look tacky and cheap.

The gold hardware wouldnt look out of place with it as it is,and it would have the CLASS look to it.Damm nice axe that could only look better with a maple neck and reverse headstock..now thats class

Yeah, I have to agree with Wendell with the purple burst and crotch maple to match. If that is out of the question and it's black or nothing, I'd say go black. At least the black would match the body and it's just too boring being just natural. Just my opinion though!
