Depends how much you want to spend, how far back you go, and what you're really looking for. Do you want something that is LIKE a Les Paul, or an exact copy?Comment

Jeff, I am not really fixed on price, but I just dont simply feel like spending $2000 on a guitar that will get occasional rotation in my learning phase.
I was just going to pick up an Epi, but they seem so bashed.

Shawn, don't get an Epi. You probably won't be happy with anything else out there either that is made recently.
Try to find an old El Degas or a Tokai. These are every bit as good as the real thing, and better. There was a good reason Gibson sued them out of existence.
I have an El Degas Les Paul Custom, and I swear to you that it is better than any real Les Paul I have ever played. Looks identical, feels better, and sounds better. Everybody I know who has tried it agrees. They all curse me for having gotten it for $300 while they have forked over upwards of $2000 a piece for Gibsons that aren't as nice.
If you buy any newer model, like say a Yamaha, be prepared to fork over extra money for good pickups. The main problem with any new guitar under $1500 is that the pickups they ship with are usually garbage.

The Epi LP Customs and the Gold tops are actually pretty nice guitars. Well made and affordable. As for Copies Try lloking for an old Ibanez LP copy or a Heritage. PRS also makes a Les Paul copy. They call it the single cut [img]graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
But seriously Aria, Ibanez and Tokai made some real nice Les Paul copies. They are hard to find but worth it.
