You can get alot of copies out there for $300 brand new now. They are a great bang for the buck. However, if you up the ante a bit, you may find a good used Les Paul Studio for $500. They are a kick ass guitar...........It all depends on whether or not you want the LP tone and vibe or just the look. If its just the look, go for the copy, however if you want that tone, and vibe, get the Studio.........

I have heard nothing but great about the ESP/Edwards LP series. Not sure about pricing, but I think they are worth checking out.

Re: Who makes a nice Les paul copy?

Tokai's always have seemed cool, but the newer ones aren't the "copies" that the older ones are.

Another I've seen a fair amount of on ebay is Orville, which is made by Gibson Japan. Exact copies with a different name - not sure about the pickups. They're all in Japan though.

If you check out www.chrisguitars.com (no, that's not me...) he's had a few Burny guitars lately that are GREAT LP copies.

That said, why don't you just buy some mid-90's Gibson LP Studios? I have a pair of them and besides a couple cosmetic differences, it's basically a LP Standard, and they can be had easily under $700.

                  Just a few thoughts.

BTW -- don't discount Epi's. But here's a tip - get an older one. Look for a logo that goes STRAIGHT ACROSS the headstock, NOT diagonal like the Gibson logos. The older ones went straight across, and were FAR better in constuction. They were also all mahogany. All you need to do to make an Epi a great guitar is put in a set of good pickups and maybe some Grovers. I've had at least a half-dozen Epi's and each one was a great guitar once modded a little.

Man, can't believe you guys didn't recommend this! These have to be the coolest Les Pauls made. If they just had a Floyd, I'd be all over one:
