Re: Les paul Standard v. Classic

Thing is, im very limited finacially, and would prefer to spend less than 800 or so bucks. Which i know i couldnt do with a les paul.

How are those early 90 studios with the ebony fretboard ? Do they have the tone and feel of a les paul without the razzle dazzle looks ? Or would I forever be stuck knowing im playing the poormans LP.

i know someone who owns a LP studio and this guitar sounds killer, plus light weight!!!
      go to german marshall forum

I have an early 90's Studio, and it kicks ass. Its much heavier than my Ace Frehley LP, and it has the PAFs, so it doesnt have the same gritty tone as the 3 DiMarzios, but it has the same feel, and the LP tone is definately there. And its built flawlessly...............Studios rock. Back in 1991, it had a list price of $849, and that is scary............

Thanks, but the thing is, i really dont want to wait. I currently dont have a guitar that plays. So the faster i get something, the better.

Re: Les paul Standard v. Classic

You can find a Les Paul Std. for $800 on occasion, if you're lucky.

A guitar that gives the Les Paul vibe for less money used is the Yamaha SG Series
like Santana played before PRS. They are
basically a double cutaway Les Paul Standard. In your range you could get a nice Hamer too, if you want to go American. You will notice with a single
cutaway like a Les Paul that upper-fret access isn't nearly as easy. You can still play and bend up there but you will have to alter your technique to do so.

You should play a lot of guitars and decide that way what to get. If you buy the first thing you pick up, you may find something you like more later, and you eat some $ when you go to trade.
                      Ron is the MAN!!!!

Those new "faded" les pauls are going for around 600 bucks these days. There are SG and flying V versions too. They have the mahogany bodies and necks, same pickups and are alot cheaper because they don't have all the fancy binding and inlays. Just my 2 cents.

I have a Classic now, had a Standard before. Same guitar, a 1 0r 2 ever so slight cosmetic changes, and the older Classics had a 'slim taper 60's' neck (not sure if the newer ones still have it). It's essentially the same thing with a pup change minus the 1K markup.
