Ummm... okay. It's still blockier feeling than an SL3 neck.

Perhaps that blocky feel is a mental block because you don't want to believe that a $300 neckthrough can approach a Soloist in basic quality. I don't think anyone said they're absolutely equal to a Soloist, just that they're basically the same type construction with cheaper finish, hardware and maybe woods. I've seen Jacksons and Charvels with very visible wing seams too, though your eloquent description could well get you a writing job at Metal Sludge; email your resume!

I've thought of getting one off the Bay used, since they're SOOO cheap. I wouldn't flip out if it wasn't as nice as a Soloist, but would be pleased if it was even close, considering.

I think 2Loud2Old stated it best. The new Baretta's are very, very similar to an 87-88 Charvel Model 5. I do think the workmanship on those old Charvel's is better though, those neck-thru 87-91 Charvel's are every bit as good as the USA stuff. I don't keep much Japanese stuff but I still have and don't see ever selling my 2 88 Model 5A's, 1 Model 5fx and an 89 750XL.

Re: New Kramers...

I know what BM is talking about...the SL3's have a heel-less construction going on, it's very nice. I haven't seen a recent USA Soloist, in the new catalog it seems like they are using the same thing on the USAs. On the older ones I've played as well as the neck-thru Charvels from back in the day, they had heels more similar to the Kramer that Ron posted the picture of.

The USA Soloist style neck heel gets in my way, but on the BASS side of the neck. The way it's cut just doesn't work for me. I move my hand up for a nice "MEEDLEY MEEDLEY MEEEEEEE!" and I smack the damn heel. I don't mind bolt-ons because I can USE the heel as a place to put my thumb. Yes, it's weird, but that's just how it works for me.

lerx: Ummm... no. The Kramers and the USA Soloists share similar neck heel construction. I hate them both. The SL3/4 has a much smoother heel that works much better for me.

Look, I've played the Kramers before. I own an SL3. I've had them side-by-side A/B'ing them and the Soloist kicks the Kramers ass. It has nothing to do with price. I've seen too many JS30's to think that price has a damn thing to do with quality.

If the Kramer and USA Soloist heels are too blocky for you, how can you stand the
REAL blocky heel of a JS30, or any bolt neck Jackson for that matter? That doesn't make a lot of sense.
