  • Need some pickup advice for the Strat project....

Okay..........now that I got my Tom Delong pickguard, 500k volume pot and chrome knob I need to figure something out. I plan on using this axe for all the punk stuff my band is doing. I know how a Seymour Duncan JB sounds in an SL1 and in most other rear routed guitars. Will there be any significant differences in the sound of the JB bucker in a top loaded Strat with an alder body? The sound I'm looking for doesn't require super high output. It needs to be like The Misfits, Samhain, The Exploited, Sex Pistols, Ramones and any other 70's, 80's punk bands. I figure a medium output pickup would do the trick because my TB-6 Distortion buckers are a little too much when it comes to punk IMHO. I do know what EG settings I'm going to have to play with so my rig is capable. Any help would be great.

Di Marzio Tone Zone is another good option, its like a slighty over wound JB, great in an alder bodied guitar.

An Air Norton could do it. Also, a PAF Pro. Personally, for medium output my favorite is the Dirty Fingers. I bet every punk band on the planet used them at one point or another. Even a nickel covered Gibson 496 would do it (and look cool as heck too).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That pickup is not even close to a JB. The JB has more high mids and treble. The TZ has more low mids and bass. The TZ is a better pickup, IMO, but if you want something with a little less power and not as bassy, go with a Norton.

A Norton is like an overwound PAF Pro which might be the perfect choice.

Dude, I wouldn't worry too much about it, just dial in the tone that you like...that's what playing punk is about-being yourself. Punk tones really run the whole spectrum, so just go with what you're most comfortable with.

Invader. You know it rocks since you had Delonge's like me. I just had one put in my Fat Strat, and now, I really feel, I have the ultimate guitar. Beautiful Single coils and a kickin Bridge Buck.
