Re: Maton guitars?
just that they are so ugly that they are barely cool. they are australian. josh homme and brodie Armstrong both play one and if they didn't, there would be zero interest in Matons. The real question is which of the them had one first? And if Brodie had never had an affair with Josh, would it be Tim Armstrong playing the Maton?
josh says:
"The first new guitars I've ever played are made by this company called Maton, a little Australian company who have been around since 1946. They're this small company who make everything from Australian wood, by hand, so their custom shop is also their assembly line, y'know. They don't ship away for parts and they only make one shape of electric. Things like that attract me, y'know. I think that's the fantasy of guitar players, to find THAT guitar in a little dusty guitar shop and then be like, "I've found it, don't tell anyone!'"

Re: Maton guitars?
http://www.maton.com.au/
There was actually quite a lot of interest here in Oz before QOTSA discovered them. As the blurb in L's post says, they've been around since 1946. Not a bad run for a guitar with "zero interest"
A lot of local bands use them. It's cool to be able to buy a good locally made guitar, support local industry and all that. They are a family-owned company and making millions, so they must be doing something right. There's no problem buying Fenders and Gibsons over here, but a lot of young guitarists are buying Matons.
Tommy Emmanuel is one notable longtime player. Here's a list of a few other pro guitarists using them: http://www.somethingabout.net/master...nd-history.htm
I've racked my brain trying to remember but I just can't recall which Canadian JCFer had one shipped over from here. Anyway, if they're still around, I'm sure they'll give you their opinion of them.Hail yesterday

Re: Maton guitars?
Thanks guys....since Brody's from Australia, I'd assume that she was playing them first. As far as Tim, I'm a big fan of his, he has a sizeable guitar collection, but none of them are Matons-most of them seem to be ES-335-style semi hollowbody guitars which I can't figure out who makes. Anyway, I saw Brody holding one in the new Guitar World magazine, and I thought it looked pretty rad, that's why I asked...I also remember Daniel Johns from Silverchair playing a Maton acoustic. Thanks!
