    Re: Les Paul Dilemna

I've got a '59 Reissue, a '60 Classic and a '57 goldtop Reissue. The Classic is the lightest of them all and the slim-taper neck is very comfortable. I like them all, but the '57 Reissue has kind of a sticky neck. It's not exactly the fastest playing Paul I've ever owned.
I just sold this one, and if you ask me, I let it go pretty cheap.

That is a beauty Standard! Not too shabby a price either. I think that settles it, I am going with the Classic. That neck really is nice, and the pickups are my cup o' tea.

The choices I have are Ebony, Honey burst, and heritage cherry burst, all at $1050.

I am leaning towards the Honey burst.

My Classic is a Honeyburst and I love it. My favorite thing about the Classic, other than the neck, is the fact that they come with the pickguard un-installed, so you have a choice. I prefer them off.

Honeyburst it is. Unfortunately the ones I am looking at are pre-owned, so they all have the "1960" pickguard already on, but it is just a couple of little holes.

              Do you like the pickups?

Also, what guage do you have on it?

It has a 496R in the neck and a 500T in the bridge. They're pretty hot. Great for any type of music, but they sound especially good with a little gain! I put a chrome cover on the neck p-up and put a blank truss-rod cover on it just to make it look a little more authentic.
I string it with Dean Markley 10's, as with my other Gibson's. Every now and then I like to play a little slide in which case I use an 11-49 set.

Im in the same delema, just debating over a Standard and a Custom.

I try to read the Les Paul forum sometimes, just that place is full of pretentious asswhipes.

Yeah, I agree. The pickups sound awesome with gain. As far as the Custom vs. the Standard, I was deciding between those, as well as the classic, and I just couldnt see the $1000 plus difference. Yes, the binding is pretty, but I liked the high output on the classic, and the 60's neck is like butter, to me. And the to me part, is important. It may be different to you. As far as the LP forum, that is what got me all screwed up in the first place. I liked the classic, and everybody over there hated the pups.

Then it occured to me, they may all be 55 and older, and what is cool to my 35 year old ears, may be horrible to them.

It took me a while to get over everyone else's opinions, and go with my own. Much happier now...

Well, I am picking up my classic tonite.

Unless I get a custom, or a Standard......

                              LOL

By the way, being a "newer" player, is there anything wrong with playing with 9's on all my guitars? What exactly is the difference other than the obvious feel?
