Isn't the Classic the light one?

Light weight? No. As a matter of fact, they are beasts. It is the one with the slim 60's neck profile, Kluson tuners, and the 496/500t pups.

I just don't understand why anyone would want that for $999 when for just a tad more you could by a standard. Shit, my Black Beauty Triple cost me $500 more than that used in MINT condition. My custom is definitely worth more than an additional $500. Well worth saving the additional dough if you ask me.

Well, I picked up my 2002 HoneyBurst Classic last nite, got it home, put on a new set of 9 elixirs, watched some hockey, and played that thing until 1:30 or so.

I made the right choice for me, as I like the hotter pickups, and really like the neck. No offense to LP Custom owners or fans, but I find the ebony sort of lifeless compared to the rosewood, but, once again, that is just me.

Money, to be truthful, was not a particular concern when it came to buying this guitar, however feel and sound was. The Custom was just TOO mellow for me, and mellow was not what I was after with a Les Paul. If I thought I needed or wanted a "better" model, I would have gotten an historic.

I guess the defacto statement in this post is,
              "for me".....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You're comparing new and used prices I guess...the Standard isn't just a "tad" more if bought new. And if you don't mind taking chances on eBay, then you could ask "why buy ANY guitar new?" Well...there are certainly good deals to be had on eBay, but you're not very protected if you wind up with a lemon. And Gibson seems to be making more than it's fare share of lemons lately, so I'd prefer either to play it first, or have a money-back return policy.

AND...I happen to like the look of that guitar - the natural mahogany top with faded cherry stain, AND the Burstbucker Pros combined with it...just got me curious. Typically, I don't like figured tops and/or binding...I especially don't care for binding on the neck. To each his/her own.

The standard doesn't cost much more new if you know where to look. Besides I was talking about myself. Given a certain budget I would rather have the better guitar over the newer guitar. I guess that is just me.

If it's just a matter of shopping around, I'd like to know where you can get this deal. Unless, of course, it involves haggling and/or being buddies with a particular salesman, which means it's not just a matter of looking in the right place.

At the traditional "40% off list", the Standard comes in at around $1700 compared to the typical $999 Studio.

Just keep your eye out. The deals are out there. New standards are a dime a dozen. Nothing special about them. When dealers need money, the deals become available.
