  • GMP Elite for $499 ?

I knew it was too good to be true...
Imagine my excitement when I saw this in a local consignment shop:

    Consignment Shop Inventory List
(scroll down and click on the GMP)

Neck-thru, quilt top, OFR, beautiful inlays - a GMP for $499 with case?!? Well, my balloon was deflated quickly after examining it. There is a large crack at the neck joint - just in the finish, but it does indicate signs of stress. Worse than that, there is some odd damage beneath the nut: long cracks in the finish on either side of the neck that extend an inch or more in both directions from beneath the locking nut, running parallel to the fretboard. I've never seen cracks like that before...it looks like the fretboard tried to separate from the neck.

Anyway, this is more of a warning than anything I guess - in case someone comes across that guitar while doing an online search. Their website doesn't describe the condition of the instrument.

They also had a nice looking Roman Quicksilver guitar, also on that page, but I didn't even bother since they were asking $1500. Is that Roman as in ED Roman?

Wow, that GMP is bee-yu-ti-ful!! For that price, you can't really lose--even if you have to get some repair work done, the total cost isn't going to be very much by GMP standards.

And yes, that Roman Quicksilver is made by Ed Roman. If you go to his website, you'll see all kinds of blather about why PRS's suck, but his rip-off Quicksilvers are great. Whatever.

Well, the damage was enough to scare me away. Before anyone jumps on this, they should call those guys up and ask them to email you some pictures of the cracks on the neck near the nut. They aren't really just cracks...it's to the point where tiny chips of finish have completely fallen off.

if its only the finish its fine. i got a killer deal on a mockingbird like that some years back. someone thought they should try removing a nut with a sledge hammer at least thats what it looked like. the finish was badly chipped but the neck & headstock wood was fine. i had the guitar for years & luved it. i didnt care if it got more scratches, dings & stuff, but it still played & sounded like it should have. roman.....makes me laugh

Jesus, they both are sweet!! I wonder if they are just finish cracks or? I wonder why these things happen on such a quality instrument? Jack.
