Jesus, they both are sweet!! I wonder if they are just finish cracks or? I wonder why these things happen on such a quality instrument? Jack.

O.k, o.k., I just couldn't stand it anymore! I've been thinking about this guitar since Evolver posted the topic, and I finally just had to break down and get it. I've ALWAYS wanted a GMP, but couldn't lay down the $3000 that they usually go for. I work for a pretty good repair shop, and I can have the stress cracks x-rayed just to make sure there's no real damage. For the price, and with a little time and effort, I can bring it back to former glory. Thanks for the tip Evolver, you da man!

It's shipping damage. People don't package guitars correctly. Mine got damaged in the same place, and was a cheap and easy fix.
Basically, the GMP necks are a bit thinner that, say, a Les Paul neck and the headstock area is weaker. If the guitar can shift in the case, it will get damaged in transport. If I wasn't so damn poor right now, I would grab either or both of those in a heartbeat.

Subvamp-

If the finish is the only problem (i.e. no wood damage) then you got a totally sweet deal!
As for myself, I'm just not a "fixer-upper" kinda guy, so that's why I passed on it. Let us know how it turns out!

Re: GMP Elite for $499 ?

Well, I got the GMP saturday. After doing ye olde cleaning, I sanded out the "cracks"...just a little 1000 grit and elbow grease until they were gone. I buffed the guitar out, and now I can't even tell where the cracks were. I put a new set of strings on, and was shocked. Up until now, I have never seen a GMP im person, much less played one. I have never played a better guitar, and I have some big dollar items in my arsenal. It feels very "solid" and the tone is unbelievable: Screamin' shread to SRV/Hendrix Strat tones. This guitar is what I've always wanted in an instrument, and I was actually starting to think I was asking for too much..that I was never gonna find it in one guitar alone. But here it is! It must be a very early model, because the serial # isn't on the back of the headstock...I found it inscribed under the tremolo plate--#204: 1997. All my other guitars feel like toys now. This is of course my humble opinion, but in all my years of playing/collecting, I have never run across a guitar that played and sounded so well. Evolver, thanks for that post dude! Excellent score!! Yes, that is an early one with the S/N under the back plate. GMP dosen't use anything fancy for the serial numbers, so #207 is the two hundred and seventh GMP.
Congrats!! I'm jealous!!
