Re: Comparing Les Paul Standard, Custom and Classic
Okay....lemme see if I can add some help here.
Les Paul Custom: Usually gold hardware, mahogany body/maple top, square/rectangular inlays on Ebony board, diamond shaped inlay on headstock, bound front/back/neck/headstock.
Les Paul Standard: Mahogany body/maple top, trapazoidal inlays on rosewood fingerboard, bound front/back/neck (? on headstock??), no inlay on headstock, just signature.
Les Paul Classic: Same as standard, but has the 60's slim profile neck and different pups.
One Les Paul is really no better than the next model, just different. A standard sounds totally different than a Custom, I think largely due to the fingerboard material.
The Classic's, I think, are great sounding guitars, with a great neck profile.
If I ever buy another Les Paul, it will be a Classic Gold Top

Re: Comparing Les Paul Standard, Custom and Classic
No prob Toejam:
The only drawback with a Les Paul is the fucking weight of them!!
After doing a gig with one, you are wrecked!
As to the good points, they play and sound incredible. Nothing really sounds like a Les Paul IMO....I think that has to do with the set-neck and the body materials, along with the fingerboard type.
Customs sound "in your face" bright with a great lead sound that cuts through, Standards are a little more subdued with a lower high frequency response...I think because the rosewood absorbs some of them.......just my theory.

Re: Comparing Les Paul Standard, Custom and Classic
Do they all weigh about the same or is a certain model a little lighter? Or does it just vary from one to another? I know there were Custom Lites and Studio Lites, but I'm just wondering about the regular models.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Re: Comparing Les Paul Standard, Custom and Classic
I dunno....the only Les Paul I have ever played is mine.
Some of my buddies back home in Maine have Standards and Classic's, but I haven't seen another Custom here in NC since I've been here since 96'.
I think they all, for the most part, are comparable in weight.

Re: Comparing Les Paul Standard, Custom and Classic
Okay, thanks. I guess I'll have to go out soon and try some more, since I haven't played one in awhile. My cousin's friend has one I played for a little bit last year, I can't remember what model exactly, but I don't remember it being that heavy for some reason. Years before that a friend had one, but I don't really remember that one either.
Where in NC are you, BTW? I've got an aunt and uncle and a couple cousins who have been in Greensboro for about 10 years or so now since they moved from NJ.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
