Re: Les Paul Special Faded?

The LP Special Faded is IMO, the worst of Gibson's Faded series, which otherwise kicks much ass. Plays like garbage.

Joe, I just played one of those Gibbys in Faded Yellow the other day, terrible finish and terrible QC. Actually all of the Goibbys I checked out had terrible QC and frets were yucky and the rosewwod they use for the boards are about as good as on an Essex guitar How can people actually shell out big money for a Gibson, when they are beeing scamed Buy another Hamer Joe, Hamers kick the shit out of the Gibson every time Jack.

People will still buy a Gibson for the name alone, despite the lack of Quality Control. I'm kinda glad, though...it keeps the price down low on used Hamers!

I like the look of the Gibson "faded" finish, and it feels pretty smooth too, like natural wood. BUT, it looks best when it's applied evenly all over. When they start trying to make it look "worn" in places, it just looks silly...and if you order one over the internet you don't know if it will look good or bad.

You guys are looking at the wrong Gibsons boyz.....I paid big bucks for an Ace Frehley Custom LP, and it has outstanding quality, and it sounds like god..................The Faded series are cheap guitars. Should we judge Jackson quality by looking at the ones made in India?...............

You shouldn't have to pay 3k or above for a good guitar.

                      Re: Les Paul Special Faded?

I picked up my first Les Paul, a 2002 Classic last week for $1050. I did all my homework, and played a ton of Gibson and other Les Paul styles (Hamer USA, ESP EC1000, etc....) and I also own a Mcarty, which most claim is "closest" to a Paul soundwise. They are all excellent guitars, and just as well built. The Mccarty is flawless, smooth and comfortable. But, NONE of them sound exactly like or have the vibe of my classic. It seems to me that if you want Les Paul sound, you buy a Les Paul. The faded Pauls, at least to this drummer's ear (huh? what did you say?) sounded wonderful on 4 or 5 out of the 10 I played, the "bad" ones maybe due to bad setup, intonation etc.., but I wanted a heavier, meatier, better looking Gibson, so I went with the Classic. Plus the slim taper 60's neck on the Classic is sweet and the binding was a must for me as well.

Yep, you have too through a bunch of Gibsons to find a nice one, and the LP Customs and Black beauties are kinda custom shop, they are very nice, but way overpriced. I do like the looks of the evenly coated SG Faded in Brown, maybe I will buy a used one of those if they offer a really low price I would pic a Hamer Custom order over a Gibson Custom order anyday, Gibby can`t touch Hamer hand made beauties. I am a huge Gibson fan, and the sad truth today is that unless it is coming out of the custom shop, chances are there are going to be construction flaws or obvious defects in the standard USA gibson lines. I still like Les Pauls that were made in the 70's and they can be had pretty cheap. Also, the classics made in the early 90's can be had for a great price and alot of them were made really good.

I'm not sure where you guys shop, but every Gibson I see at the store, except the el chepo Faded are built top notch, and have no problems with them. Now, I have seen some 70's models that were absolutely appalling, but that was another era. I know that defects are out there, but I find its more common to find minor finish flaws from just about any company out there than to find anything thats really going to affect playability. I think there is a serious backlash against Gibson because alot of people do not like their prices. I have a 1991 Studio, that back then had a list price of $899. A new Studio today list for about $2,000 and it doesnt have an ebony board, or gold hardware for that. I think the 91 price is way to low, but the price while high is still not that high when you consider the CNC guitars coming out of some of the other companies out there with an even higher price tag.....
