    Re: Peavey Adrian Vandenburg

I have got the purple v-type as well
(I already tweaked mine a bit, extra inlays, 2 seymour duncans)
I wanted to replace the trem with a schaller one but this one actually stayed in tune much better

I had an original series Peavey Vandenberg back in the late '80s. It was my first USA guitar, too. I remember getting a really good deal on it, too, though I don't remember how much I paid.

Of course, it was kind of neglected under my ownership, as I bought it while I had my first Jackson custom shop on order, so it really only got regularly played for a few months. And once I got married and my then-wife insisted I cut down on the number of guitars, it was the first to go.

I did really like it, though. Very good player. Excellent neck. I've seen some of them on eBay from time to time and considered partaking. BUt I haven't yet.

I can't believe how bad my memory has gotten. My Vandy was not my first USA guitar. I had at least one before that (a USA B.C. Rich Warlock) and may have had another one (I don't know if the early '80s Kramer Vanguards were USA made or not).

Not that it really matters, but I can't believe I had a brain slip like that.

But the main point was that the Vandys were good guitars. Personally, I think they were underappreciated in their time.

For those who prefer a less flashy version of the V-Type, Musician's Friend has a "limited quantity" of refurbs in the non-abalone, satin finish version of the V-Type for $299 w/tremolo or $249 w/string-through-body, at:

          Refurbs

I don't know if those are neck-through, though.

If I had my choice, I would've chosen the gloss black "Limited" (abalone) version, which looks really striking in the pics I've seen, but I was lucky to find one at all at my local (small) music store, and it played well, etc., so I decided to go for it, purple and all. It is kind of cool not to have to pay any extra for a highly figured top, though, as all the "Limited" model colors (black, trans purple, white) are the same price. The white is a pearl white, I think, and has gold hardware. I never much cared for gold hardware, but I think that would be cool too, with a kind of Vai vibe.

            RE: "I already tweaked mine a bit, extra inlays . . ."

Those inlays are really nice. I would love to get something like that done at some point. How did you ever get that done?

The other major modification I may someday entertain is to get the neck shaved (backside). I love thin necks, and this neck, while very comfortable, is thicker than the necks on my Jacksons. I've trimmed necks before with sandpaper and a micrometer and obtained very good results, but those were junker guitars, with bolt-on necks, so I didn't have much to lose. If I did it to this, I would want it done right.

So . . . anyone ever have that done? Who does it? How much, etc.? Thanks!

the inlays I made myself from slaps of abalone
(bought from Shellex GmbH in Germany, they have a website somewhere)and I inlayed them with the help of my trusty dremel

I like the neck of my V but if you want shave it I guess by just sanding it down to the bare wood would already have a significant effect on the feel
