• Decent cheap acoustic?

A friend of mine wants to learn to play on an acoustic. He only wants to spend about $100 or so as he isn’t sure if he will really learn to play or not. I have never owned and acoustic.

Can anyone recommend a good brand/ model that he could get for that low of a price?

Thanks!

Look at eBay auctions for Jay Turser. I bought a flag one like this about a year ago:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=2385
(the stripes are really straight by the way, its his camera that makes them look angled).

Quality was surprizingly good for the money (look at completed auctions and these flags go from $92 to $160) for a guitar from Asia. I tweaked it a little by adjusting the truss rod and filing the nut string grooves (to lower the strings closer to the fretboard) a little and put thinnest acoustic strings on it (all so it would feel more like an electric), and it plays well. Plays better then my Ovation Tangent 357 that I paid $450 for! (and I had to tweak truss rod and file the nut on the Ovation too).

I would scope the pawn shops for obscure brands that pawn shops know nothing about. I once scored a K. Yairi Signature custom for $100 because the guy didnt know what it was. It took very little to convince a friend it was worth trading his neckthru Mockingbird for it.........

If you want something new try the Yamaha FG403s
Solid top nice balanced tone and realy easy to play out of the box. It usually runs about 200 bucks. So for the money its a better guitar than what your paying for. Best bang for the buck.

i think you should spend a little bit more for a solid top acoustic. solid tops sound much better and age much better.

i would recommend you to take a look at wahburn acoustics.

my gf just got me a washburn 12 string for xmas and its awesome...

http://www.washburn.com/products/acousticg/d46s12.shtm

solid spruce top, grover tuners, etc...all for $270.

I agree with Accept2; hit the pawnshops with your friend and try some out. Just check the neck's straightness like you would an electric, and check the top to make sure it's flat and not bowed up, then play it and listen for any rattles that might be a loose or broken brace.
Look at the back of the bridge to see if
there's a gap between the bridge and the
guitar's top. That's a good way to detect the top bowing up if it's hard to see otherwise. You don't want that because the action will get higher and higher, and cost more to fix than your $100 limit.

I just got a Rogue acoustic/electric with cutaway off Ebay for $60. It's a copy of
the Charvel 625C, except 23 frets instead of 24. Not near as nice as the 625C, which I owned once, and a bit boxy in construction, but for a beginner it'd be
really nice. Easy to play, stays in tune, active preamp with 3-band EQ so you can plug into a PA, it'd probably satisfy
him for a year or 2, and he'd probably keep it from sentimental value even after. Look on Ebay for Rogue, Applause,
Epiphone, Jay Turser, JB PLayer; those are all brands that you can score entry
level guitars for cheap that are serviceable.
Ron is the MAN!!!!
