I really like the Custom 5 from Duncan. It reminds me of the JB, but warmer with more midrange.

Re: New Pickup Configuration

well you have to understand, its a front routed guitar with an ofr. So every time i want to do a soldering job, i have to take off all the strings, undo the pickguard, and flip it all over. Then after i do my rewiring, i have to put all the strings back on, and all the screws back in. So it would be a few hours a day going "fuck, it didn't work!... i'll try again tomorrow..." and then not having enough time, so i end up working on it once a week or once a month lol.

you do know that you can pull the trem off without taken the strings off or even unlocking the nut.you dont even have to detune the strings,
you can leave them at full tension.

well that Idea did come into play. When i did it the three unwrapped strings decided to twist, and break off >.o so ya that sucked. but oh well. Next guitar i get won't be a front rout under the strings. I think i'll be getting either an RR5 or a warrior next.

New Pickup Configuration

Woohoo, i finally got the pickups in my RG250DX working! Took me a year and a lot of help from Ace, but i got it all working now

Okay, here's the layout
Neck: Stock Powersound (soon to be switched with a jazz modle)
Middle: Hotrails
Bridge: JB

I mostly use the hotrails and JB blended together. If i have any parts where i'll need a clean channel, i can switch to the powersound (which surprises me in its clarity).

So what do you think? I'm a little iffy about the JB being in there. but i don't know what else i can try.

Re: New Pickup Configuration

I've had a JB in 3 guitars (Dinky, RR1, and something else I can't recall ) - it's great for the neck is you like bluesy clean and dirty tones, but I thought it sucked for the bridge. Weak and lifeless, and buzzy as hell with higher gain settings.

I much prefer the Custom or Distortion in the bridge.

Re: New Pickup Configuration

Chuck, i DIDN'T unlock the nut. The strings twisted below the nut over the fretboard. so

Anywho, I like the sound of the jb mixed with the hotrails. I can put as much gain as i want, and no squeel

Re: New Pickup Configuration

Newc if the JB you tried had no tone or output there was something wrong with that pickup. I have at least 4 JBs ans they all sound great. They're from different generations too. The Custom Custom isnt as high of an output as the JB but it does have great tone. I have one in a Epi LP custom that just plain rocks. The JB is my favorite Duncan bridge pup. It's creamy and sweet yet you can hear the notes and just sounds awesome with a good tube amp.
I've never tried the JB in the neck on purpose. Although when I bought one of my HM strats it had two JBs in it. Iy was routed for two hums with a dummy single in the middle. It didnt really sound to bad although it may mud out a bit in the basswood body your Ibanez. My strat was alder which is bright in tone than Basswood.
I would do a Screamin demon in the neck or a jazz.
