I have several custom shop guitars including Jacksons, Fenders, Robins, and Gibsons. I'm always looking for something cool and unusual, so last year I bought a new custom shop Gibson Limited Edition Satin Explorer. When it arrived, I was shocked at the number of problems including a rear strap pin screwed in crooked, numerous dents in the finish, uneven beveling on the body, volume control would cut out, input jack was installed upside down which only allowed partial jack insertion, a thumb print in the finish on the back of the neck, and an unfinished fretboard.
I contacted the Custom Shop and they told me to send it back and they would correct the problems. To make a really long and painful story brief, the guitar was sent back three times over the course of 11 months. Finally, the week prior to Christmas, the Custom Shop said my guitar was finally ready. When I received it, I checked it from top to bottom. 95% of the problems had been corrected, however, where the neck joins the fretboard, there is a fucking ridge almost the size of pencil lead. In other words, if you hook your thumb over the neck to play any chord or single note, you feel a ridge under your thumb.
So, I call the Custom Shop and they said that since it was an unbound guitar, Gibson allowed for ridges since it was a process done by hand. Well, when I explained that I had numerous unbound Gibsons without this problem, I was told that the conversation was taking a sour note and that there was nothing further they could do.
So, let this be a lesson my dear friends. Never buy a new guitar site unseen and believe all the horror stories about Gibson's Custom Shop!
