In other words, two custom shop guitars are built. One is perfect and the other has "allowances." The perfect axe goes to the preferred dealer and the one with a slight blemish, uneven binding, unfinished whatever the fuck, goes to Musician's Friend or a similar type store.

well, that's total shit. stupid Gibson and their "allowances"...so give the crap to MF so it can be sold at high prices?! give the good stuff to a "preferred" dealer to sell at even higher prices?! maybe Gibson should can some dealers and lower their output so they could insure that their over priced clunkers can be more consitent!! (BTW, I don't hate Gibsons...they are just waaaaay over priced.)
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

GERMANDETH

Any insider info to when the switch to the new Deth boards will be complete?

Anyhoo - I would have to agree -- dropping that kind of dough into a 'custom, hand made instrument' you'd think it would be flawless - with a few minor exceptions of course. Otherwise, it kinda takes the away from the exclusivity.

Re: Gibson Custom Shop, Yea Baby!

It sounds to me (maybe I'm stating the obvious) like the Custom Shop started to build your guitar to include a bound fretboard, and then decided to take the lazy way out when they realized their goof-up. Evidently, reading the customer's order must not be a strong suit at the Custom Shop.

Another possibility is that when they got your order, they had a partially completed Explorer sitting around and just haphazardly finished it off, unconcerned that it wasn't going to work for your specs. If the fretboard was built to be bound, then I would guess the rest of the body was, as well, since I've never seen a Gibson with only a bound neck. That might account for the uneven beveling, since a body intended to be bound would not be beveled, and they might have just done an quickie "eyeball job" on it. All just speculation, of course. Could be, they just got drunk at lunch and carved the body that afternoon...

The rest of the problems sound like straight-ahead poor quality control. Inexcusable in a big-buck handmade guitar, when your average mass-produced Samick wouldn't go out the door with any one of those defects.

In any event, this is a horror story, and you have my sympathies.

I can't believe a company like Gibson just doesn't seem to give a damn.

For what it's worth it's a damn fine looking axe.

Many times when I have a hassle getting a guitar it's hard for me to enjoy it as much. My favorite guitars seem to be the ones where the purchase experience was pleasant.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thank you! It is a killer sounding guitar and the looks will blow you away (minus the pick ridge). On top of that, the rosewood fretboard has the tightest, prettiest grain pattern I've ever seen.

Until my tech can obtain the exact paint (that will have to come from the Gibson Custom Shop, so I'm probably boinked in the ass again) and can shave/file/sand the "ridge," it will remain in the case out of sight so my blood pressure will return to normal.

I bet if the top Yoke at the Gibson custom shop had his fucking teeth wedged in that ridge they would fix it! Sounds like a good excuse for a road trip to Me.
