Re: Fender strat Texas Special

The Texas Specials certainly don't do metal. If you want a nice dual purpose metal/rock/blues pickup you should go with aDimarzio HS1 or HS2 in the neck, a stock middle position TS and a Dimarzio HS-3 in the bridge. Also, I had a strat with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders that was very quiet and it was a total monster. I don't like the VV or the Noiseless or the Lace Sensors. IMHO, they are weak in output and sterile sounding. They are great for the studio though because they are completely silent but they are too wimpy for me. If you want to do Texas Blues you need hot singles. Eric Johnson uses a Dimarzio HS-3 but wired in single coil. EMG SA's sound great too.

Although I happen to like all of the pups that you mentioned, I don't understand how you can call them weak. Texas Specials are weaker than the VV Heavy Blues, and the VV Solo for sure. They are maybe on par with the VV '54 at best. I can understand you liking them. I liked the TS. They were just noisy. They sound good. They don't sound great.

thanks for all the input guys. I would want something that is pretty good all around but mainly geared for blues and a really good clean tone. I love nice cleans since im not too used to having them. Its ok for them not to be perfect for metal since I got other guitars to do that.

thanks a lot fellas. I think the noise would get on my nerves because little noises, after a while, really tick me off. Ill just find me a good strat that plays nice and work from there. I might try those VV pickups or go with the Fender noiseless. Thanks a lot guys. Now I just got to find the best strat for me.

The main reason that I didn't think the TS would work for you is that you mentioned that you want to start to play the blues, but also play rock and metal. If you play high gain at all, the noise will be immense. I play with a good deal of gain at times, which just made the TS unreasonable. Noiseless or at least quieter pups will make your strat more versatile, which is important if it is your only guitar

I am gonna have to take a second look at the VV pickups. I never really gave them much of a chance the one time I tried them. Thanks for the info "daddy-o"

No problem bro. There are quite a few different ones in the line. perhaps another model would do it for you. Who knows, maybe you just don't like them. Since they are quite, they work well when I switch on the preamp and get some really beefy tones. Switch it off and pure strat. If you are ever in NYC let me know and you can play it all you want.
