  • Chandler Les Paul...Wierd!

Did anyone see this? I have never heard of such a thing. It was probably a bolt on, but if it was set-neck that would be bad ass. Fairly collectable either way, I would think.

That's a pretty nice looking flame top it has. Could someone fill me in on these Chandlers? What is so special about them ?

That's a BS story if I ever heard one. Patent infringement? Yeah, I guess that's why every other cheapass guitar manufacturer out there is still building LP copies. First off, it doesn't have the open book headstock, which is the big no-no as far as Gibson is concerned, and it doesn't even have the same control layout.

The seller is correct. There aren't supposed to be any of those guitars in existance. For the Chandler or Les Paul collector that guitar is an extremely nice almost Holy Grail type of find. That sale price was a friggin steal.

Hey Chandler made some damn fine guitars.I wouldn't call them cheap ass guitars. You would be suprised how many big name guitar players used chandlers in the 80s and 90s.I used a chandler (bound neck and headstock)neck on my star mutt.I've got two more a pointy maple/maple no dots and a pointy ebony and no dots. These are great necks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I stand corrected JG. Can I ask you though, why would they destroy them when many other companies build much closer replicas?

As far as I understand the whole "lawsuit" thing, (and I've read quite a lot about it) Gibson only threatened to sue certain manufacturers who were making copies with the open book headstock if they didn't cease and desist. Aria and Ibanez were the chief offenders from what I understand. Both companies subsequently made very minor changes to their headstock designs, and Gibson left them alone. Some Aria copies were so close, they even had the identical split-diamond inlay on the headstock.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Chanler guitars are cheap-ass, just that many manufacturers (a lot of them being cheap-ass) make copies that are just as similar if not more so. Jay Turser, Suzuki, Samick, and Karera are just a drop in the bucket.

                Re: Chandler Les Paul...Wierd!

Because Chandler made such fine instruments and because they manufactured necks, bodies and hardware in the USA for many of the high end boutique builders back in the 80's, they had a huge target on their head. Especially from other USA manufacturers. Back in the 80's, the Chandler Super strat was one of the most high-end strats you could get. Did you know that Chandler was the first company ever to offer and install a Kahler on a guitar? I believe it was the patend pending Flyer. Gibson and Fender really picked their battles back then.

Here's a scan from my original copy. And if I had seen that auction, that guitar would have been mine...VERY rare piece!

I'm in the process of buying a suntech les paul copy. This one has a mahogony body and neck and maple cap, body and neck binding with pearl block inlays on dark rose wood. The headstock has the open book cut and the lower body bout is identical to a gibson. This is a late 70s early 80s japanese guitar. The kicker is its loaded with two double cream laminated bobbin super Ds.

                          Nice!
I line the way it looks. Not sure how it would play.
But for the price with Gibson pickups,I think is a great deal.
