• Gibson SG special faded.

I was looking at one in a music store the other day, and it seemed like a great deal.

Has anyone played one of these or better still, actually owned one? How do they hold up?

I just had a Brown one in here and I was impressed with it, especially for the money. I would imagine they would hold up fine. I say grab one.

Re: Gibson SG special faded.

I have one, it is my main player. It was born 11/25/02. I am at least the third owner: the headstock was broken completely off and repaired sometime before the prior owner got it.

IMO, an SG doesn't look like an SG without covers, so I put gibson nickel covers on the stock pups and potted them (John, jgcable, helped me with that).

I've had it about three months, and I'm still tweaking the set up. The tune-o-matic is all new to me.

I spend anwhere from 1 to 2 hours on it a day, if I need it or not ( ), always at home. I don't gig, so I can't tell you anything about how well it would hold up under working conditions.

I linked a picture in this thread:
SG Thread

I love it. The finish is a little rough, like my buddy said, a lot like playing a broom. I like that.

I don't know how their Q.C. is, so if you get a chance to play one and like it, it would be hard to go wrong for the money.

My two cents!

You really can't go wrong with an SG. The Faded is a great value. Personally, I am more of a 68' SG man myself. The Faded is a real players guitar. Great balance and very comfortable to play for long stretches. It also sounds fantastic clean which is one of the attributes that nobody ever talks about.

That is true about the clean. I play a lot of different styles, or try to, and a good fat bell-ringing clean is important to me.

Of course, you gotta play a lot of AC/DC on it, too. I think the law says that you have to.

I have a faded SG that I potted some nickel covers on like axtogrind did. excellent guitar! I've heard lots of complaints about quality control on the fretwork and that sort of thing on the faded series, but mine has no issues whatsoever. (and for that matter, sharp fret ends (the most common complaint) would be covered under the warranty so you could get them worked on for free from a gibson dealer)

Hey guys...what sort of price range are we talking about on these things? I saw some at GC, but they didn't have any prices on them. I was somewhat interested in them, but figured they were probably just as high as the rest. These are USA-made, right?

US made, correct. New they're about $650. I've been drooling over one for a couple of weeks now. I'm probably the odd man out, but I prefer the way they look without pickup covers. It just seems more like it's ready to kick you in the balls.

Man, year end they were $599 from the Fiend, but I see now that they're at $649.

Whatcha need to do, then, for a deal, is wait for one with a broken head...

I love the look of the Faded Brown one and uncovered pickups. I also liked the one with the 1 Moon inlay better than the newe one with full dots, but no biggie Jack.

My Pewter SG has the faded type of paint job. I paid $599 last year. As a matter of fact I got it on March 7th of last year, My Birthday!!!!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's exactly what I'm looking at, with the dot inlays, and faded brown. I also prefer uncovered pickups. I'm probably gonna go put down a deposit on Monday. They have to order me one, because all they have in stock is the faded cherry.

They probably did it to save $10 per guitar.
