Re: What neck wood for a Les Paul

I prefer maple necks on a whole because i tend to like raw maple necks or a light tung oil finish like my Carvins. Mahogany without a finish tends to feel a bit rougher and that bugs me really fast.

Well, both of my old LP Customs had maple necks, and I always got killer tone out of them. I'd say they definitely have a little more 'bite' to the sound than a mahogany necked guitar. But the difference is probably not so dramatic if you use heavy gain--you'd probably notice the difference a lot more on a clean or slightly overdriven sound.

Interesting stuff guys. I was planning on having the neck finished in Nitro like the rest of the guitar, but I guess if I went maple then an oil finish is the way to go. Ah, the horror of choice!!! Sometimes it's so much easier when you can't have much of a choice.

And Ronnie, this has always been in this section, I think the meds are starting to wear off.

I had my Wayne made with a maple neck/FretB and Mohagany body. I really like the way it sounds. It's got a nice smooth glassy sound and it cuts through the mix quite well. Although it is not a set neck like a les paul. I like my les paul but it really does lack attack when compared to my Jacksons of my Wayne. It just doesn't cut through on stage.

Then there's gotta be a pickup or amp setting issue if your LP doesn't cut on stage - maybe EQ it differently than the other guitars?
Mine was always the cutting through when I played live.
