• Ibanez Roadstar II's

So whats the deal with these guitars? I always hear a bunch of good comment about them, like they are great when it comes to price vs quality.

Can someone clue me in on what so many like about these guitars?

I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that those guitars were the ones that ended up becoming the RG series from the late 80s to now. My friend growing up had one and it rocked. Sweet tremelo and it even had a coil tap on it.

The best Roadstar IIs are the ones from 1986, as they have the original Edge..........The RS/RG lineup goes from utter crap, to really good, so you have to jusge on the individual guitar, and not the lineup itself..........

The solid-topped Strat-shapes (i.e. before they started ripping off the Jackson Dinky) with the little notches/bumps on the horns were great as I recall. A friend had one that was white around the sides/top edge with a black/purple burst in the center with a matching head (Strattish-style head, not the later/current RG-style).

They usually had great tone, playability, and were very sturdy.

They had a couple of high-end versions of the Roadstar II, including a Holdsworth signature model (or was it a Lukather--I can't keep it straight!), that were not beater guitars at all, but you almost never see any of them nowadays. When I first started playing, I had a poster on my bedroom wall of the entire RS-II line, circa 1982, which I had gotten free at the local music store.

The only RS-II I ever owned was a bass, which was actually a pretty sturdy piece of gear, though it did have a painted bolt-on neck--which you don't see everyday!

I wanted one of those after I saw Gary Moore playing one in his Empty Rooms video. It was dark purple. Apparently, he didn't use the Ibanez for long, about long enough to shoot the vid!
