• Question for Jim Shine!

Jim, that SD Charvie parts guitar I just got has graphite saddles. I think they are tone suckers, personally.
What are the best sounding v-trem saddles to put on it?

I find 'better' is subjective. I personally like the sound of steel saddles, but others prefer brass. Its all about what you like best. Saddles are cheap, so experiment, and don't sell any until you find a set that sounds the best to your ears.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've actually heard that before. Some people just say they're darker sounding. I'm thinking of ordering a Carvin 7-string soon and am debating whether or not to get those String Saver saddles. They're supposed to be slippery and just prevent breaking strings, but I've never really had a string-breaking problem anyway.

Chuck,

Based on my own personal experience...
Differences between brass and steel

Brass gives you a somewhat sharper attack, and silly abundance of sustain.

Steel on the other hand...less pick attack...warmer overall output.

And finally yes...Graphite saddles are indeed tone suckers....avoid at all costs!

(these are opinions based on my own experience with using all types, and doing the exact same experimentation Jim had mentioned that you try) It all depends on what you like.

Okay then. Thanks! I could have sworn I read that somewhere once. Though, I've never had a guitar with brass hardware.

i think its depends i have graphtecs saddles on a brass V-trem & it sounds great. Ive had brass saddles & steel saddles on this guitar but went back the the graphtecs. i found them to be the most even tone wise. i thought the steel ones sounded brighter than the brass ones & the graphtecs split the difference between the 2.

Chuck

I have all types of brass an chrome and steal saddles, Brass is brighter and sometimes brittle, depending on the pickup. Most Steal sounds warmer and does the brown sound and SRV better. I am a brass snob but the chrone trem on my star sounds better and my cheap looking $20 fender bridge sounds the best

Go figure

While I'm being schooled...I'm seeing references to two different string spacings : USA and Import. What are the measurements?

And one last question: Who makes strat bodies with a 2 1/8 neck pocket and the narrower of the string spacings?

Their is more than 1 USA spacing. My older SD trems have a tighter spacing than my Schecter trems. Thehole spacing is different as is the saddlespacing. If you have an import body, the USA trems may not fit right
