• newb question on Korina Ibanez Destroyer

Yep, the EVH one. Whassup? I look at eBay and there are a couple of Ibanez Destroyer Korinas, but all the descriptions say, "not really made out of Korina, but painted Ash to look like Korina".

Was real Korina ever really used in an Ibanez Destroyer? I did a google, but not much info on "the Korina line was really painted Ash" thingie...

I seem to remember that many Japanese copies of Explorers and Vs were ash stained to resemble Korina.

Yes...all the early Destroyers and V's were bleached Ash, stained amber to give the appearance of Korina. However...this is strange, because there were some Iceman guitars from the same period that were actually made of Korina!....go figure

Being an Explorer freak, I always wanted to pick up one of the early Ibanez Destroyers. Most of the ones I have seen have either been butchered, or if original, are priced too high. I have 3 Gibson Explorers for now, if I find a Destroyer priced right I may get one.

Scott,

They are pretty nice if you can get them cheap enough. Super lightweight! I passed on one about 3 years ago that was clean as a whistle for $400.00...felt like a dumbass later on!!...LOL!

Re: newb question on Korina Ibanez Destroyer

I thought the original run of Destroyers (including Eddie's) were made of korina, and then all the ones that came after were made from different things.

Nope....misinformation. All early Destroyers and V's were Ash...there may be a few rare ones out there that may have been made of actual Korina...but if there are..they are extremely scarce. There was never even an option in the catalogs from the 70's that offered any of those models in Korina.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Nah...Eddie may have been misinformed as well...it wasn't made known to the public that they were actually ash...Or...Eddie may have actually had one of the super rare Korina ones.

Yes Scott....I still kick myself in the ass for that one!...LOL!

Yeah, Eddie did say his was made out of Korina and that after that they changed the models to ash or whatever and he never could find one that sounded as good as his Korina model. Maybe he was just informed or whatever.

I've seen one...and it was unmistakenly built of Korina (with the mahogany-like grain...and not the big wide veins that ash has).
I know the grains of these woods very well as they are all I used to build my own guitars with. (all 3 variations of ash...although I preferred Swamp)

I've heard from several sources in the business that there were a few here and there made of Korina. It's very likely Ed's is one of those.

Ed basically made a statement that the later Destroyers that were made of ash were "turkeys" (or something to that effect). Now, either Ed is "tone" deaf (doubtful) or he actually had a Destroyer made of real Korina. That would be the logical conclusion.

All the eBay sellers are careful about putting a disclaimer on their auctions (this is not real korina...just ash painted to look like korina). But there is absolutely nothing on the web that talks to the issue of the Korina line actually being built of ash (the dead tree version of the aforementioned order form notwithstanding) nor anything on any uber rare protos that were actually built out of Korina.

Oh well. No biggie. Just curious. Thanks, everyone!

Ibanez Korina Destroyer-
George Lynch used these guitars in his pre Dokken days with "the Boyz" and "Xciter". It was made in the late-70s, during a time when Ibanez was still a young company, making identical copies of Gibson guitars prior to a lawsuit that forced them off the US market.

This guitar was made to the exact specifications as a Gibson korina wood Explorer. While the Gibson features a mahogany neck, this Ibanez has a maple neck joined to a korina wood body.
