• Q: on lefty LP on the bay...

Could someone help me out on this one please?

Found this pretty nice LP on Ebay, which looks as to be the real deal.
Only thing that gets to me is the Les Paul logo on the headstock;
Is it supposed to be 'reversed', like on a regular? Cos i think it looks fishy...

'78 Les Paul Lefty

That, and the fact that the seller usually is dealing a lot of high-end Pauls. I would say it's ok.

There are 2 things of note with this auction.

1: In the shot of the back, the neck and body are completely different colours. What's with that?

2: The girl at the bottom. Yum!!

I would suspect, since leftys weren't too common, that they had ready-made necks and just slapped them on a lefty body.

I am pretty sure that they did infact use right handed necks.

Zeegler my guess on your #1 is that the body is mahogany, while the neck is maple.
They changed from both being mahogany sometime in th mid 70s, from what I've heard.
Correct me if im way off tho

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">How is a neck designated as lefty or righty? A neck is a neck is a neck. You just change the nut for it to be strung the other way.

For one, the logos are flipped vertically (check the Les Paul script on the headstock in the linked auction). If you have an asymmetrical back shape left vs right becomes a big issue. Also, you have to have reversed tuners. Furthermore, a lefty neck that has an asymmetrical headstock will be reversed if you use it as a righty (reverse pointy, anyone?).

In theory, there aren't any differences. But theory and practice are different things.

Well, I'm just talking about the neck itself on a Les Paul. It has a 3+3 headstock, and tuners and logo change are a given. It's not going to change the neck shape any if a lefty plays it versus a righty.

On something like a standard LP the only difference is the logo flop and different nut cut. You asked how it was designated a righty versus lefty, I gave you the answer. That's all there is to it.
