Ibanez RG1527 - 2003 prestige model

Wizard-7 Prestige neck
3pc. Maple Neck Material
Basswood Body
24/Jumbo frets
Rosewood Finger Board
Edge Pro 7 bridge
IBZ V7-7 (H) Neck PU
IBZ V8-7 (H) Bridge PU
Pearl Dot Inlay
PC : Hardware Color

I swapped out the original pickups for a Duncan Custom/Jazz set (made a huge difference). My only complaint about this guitar is the wizard neck. The fit and finish are great, don't get me wrong. I've just always preferred thick necks. It takes a little bit of getting used to when switching from my 6 stringers. The sound is very open and clear thanks to the Duncans. I don't use the trem much so I can't comment on that. I string up with 11's and tune down 1/2 step so the tone is nice and beefy with good harmonics. Because it is so open sounding, it doesn't hide mistakes very well. What you play is what you hear, so I have to concentrate a little more on my technique than with others. Upper fret access is flawless (all bolt-ons should adopt Ibanez's all access neck joint in my opinion).

Schecter USA sunset-7

bolt-on maple neck (unfinished; oiled/waxed)
swamp ash body
24 frets
Ebony board, bat inlays
strings-through-body bridge
dual EMG 707s
sperzels
matte black

I got it from Stu here on the board and I'm still madly in love with it It plays like butter, the emgs are tight yet huge sounding (I use a standard set of 10s (10-46) + a 60 for the low B)

i own an Ibanez RG 7420, while it plays awesome, i can't say that about its sound... at low volumes it sounds really good, but when you turn it up....V8 pickups, MUDDY as fuck, so i got it Dimarzio Blaze...didn't like those either, but o'm leaving em there, all i can say it's apretty versatile and comfy guitar, but the basswood body doesn't help, unless you get it some really good pickups

Schecter A-7 tuned 1/2 step down with 10-70 gauge. I am running a stock C26 Carvin humbucker in the bridge and I custom wound and potted the Duncan Designed neck humbucker. It is one huge chunk of mohagony. It is the biggest sounding 7 stringer I have ever owned. I have owned in the past the Carvin DC727, DC747, RG7620, RG7621, and a killer Epiphone 1958 Korina wood 7 string Flying V. The Schecter slays them all.

...OK, how many here own non-Jackson 7 strings? Tell me about 'em!

I'm curious as to the likes and dislikes out there, so I'll start things off:

Currently, I have an LTD H207. It's a pretty solid guitar, now that I have managed to get the neck set properly and replaced the bridge pickup with a DiMarzio Blaze. (Man, did the original Duncan Design suck.) I do have some issues with it, though: the tuners are a couple of steps above suck, there are a few dodgy frets, the tunamatic bridge is only about one step above suck in terms of quality, and the combination of ash body and maple neck with rosewood board doesn't do much for low B resonance.

I won a Washburn Sonic 7 last week on evilBay (with a maple board, no less!) that should be here Thursday. I suspect it will replace the LTD as my stage backup.

Tell me what you've got out there...

--Schecter A-7 Elite neckthru. This has become my main guitar now that I've gone 7-string crazy. Of course, I still pick up my Soloist and play a few runs to let her know that I still love her... Anyway, I really love the Elite, now that I replaced the Duncan Design in the bridge with a Duncan Distortion. Totally juicy and solo-worthy, while still having very good low-B definition. I'm a little weird, though, because I use very thin strings (9-11-14-22-30-38-54) and tune down a half-step, and the Distortion really works well with thin strings by putting lots of body in--while the thin strings provide extreme articulation to my notes. A Distortion might be too much with thick strings, where you'd probably want an EMG-707 or such.

The tune-o-matic bridge on my Elite has started to become 'normal' to me again (I'm an old Les Paul guy) after years of Floyd guitars. I'm certainly not missing the complications of changing strings. I've increased my use of legato techniques (sliding up into notes, for example) to compensate for the lack of a trem.

--Schecter V-7. This is a basswood-bodied strat shape guitar. I replaced the DD pickups in this one with a Blaze Neck/Blaze Custom combination. The Blaze Custom is an awesome pickup, since it does not have extreme mid-scoop that the regular Blaze does. Very tight, hot, and focused sound that works well with basswood. I still prefer the Duncan Distortion 7, however, which is just a lot 'juicier'. The V-7 has a craptacular no-name Floyd that doesn't stay in tune very well (it's probably the same bridge that the ESP LTDs have, since they are both Samicks in reality), so I've blocked it from upward travel and cranked the trem springs pretty tight. I mostly use it for the occasional solo part that requires 7-string and trem, but no subtlety from the trem since tight springs make that very difficult. My Soloist is such a great guitar for trem work that I record with that much more often than the Schecter where I need a trem.

I should be getting a Washburn WG587 on monday. A fellow band member recently bought one and i just had to get the money to get one. The pickups are hot (for washburn these pickups sound fantastic). The neck is nice (just like a Jackson neck). The sound is great and the low B doesn't sound mushy. Possibly the best seven string i've played so far.

Other than their puzzling predilection for basswood, I can't figure out why Ibanez keeps foisting basswood-bodied 7-strings off on the world. Vai likes the sound, but that doesn't mean that the entire Ibanez line has to use that stuff!

Re: Yet another 7 string post...

Vai's main guitar has an alder body. His 7-strings are all basswood bodied (I think), but he doesn't use his 7-strings very often.

I'm not into 7-strings that much myself. I might get one someday.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, I've never been able to figure that out either. Though, the Korn K7 model is mahogany, I think the neck is maple with an ebony board, maybe rosewood, I can't remember. It's got PAF Pro-7 pups, but it's also got that stupid K7 inlay at the 12th fret which I think glows in the dark. I believe the side dots also glow. Seems like a decent guitar, but a little expensive.

Non Jackson 7's...
Ibanez RG 7621 - white with custom pickguard and truss rod cover. Stock p'ups - this is my beater, but she plays great and never gives me any problems.
Brian Moore C-557, trans black top - Moore trem, w/Dimarzios, 22 fret maple neck, rosewood board. Another good sounding guitar.
Greco custom - ex endorsee guitar - trans green maple top, H/S/H p'up configuration, real floyd, gold hardware, 24 fret maple neck w/ rosewood board. Came with custom Dimarzios... swapped out to a distortion/jazz combo. STUPID low action... may swap the bridghe p'up out...
Tom Anderson metallic green H/S/H.. hasn't been played much, but that has changed recently. Also may be picking up its "brother" soon.... great player and beefy sound. TRS trem.
And of course, my baby - Soloist 7 in EDS ... 2 EMG 707's....

I had an Ibanez RG7620 that was very nice, and the custom DiMarzio "New 7" pups were pretty good, I just didn't care too much for the overall sound of the basswood body, so I traded it. That was the only 7-string I've owned, but I'll eventually get another... either a Carvin DC727 or DC747.

I have one 7-string;

Conklin GTG-7 (Groove Tools Guitar)

Hardtail (Strat-style string-thru)
Cherry wood body, 5 pc. Maple/Purpleheart neck
Rosewood fretboard w/ offset inlays
Bolt-on (Awesome heel!)
Push-pull coil-tap
Black finish
Made in Korea
Paid only $200 USD (Pawn shops, gotta love 'em)

I use it almost exclusively for "metal", or my dabblings therein. It's tuned 1/2 step down, and right now it has a custom set of 9-60 gauge strings installed. It sounds good to my ears, but I don't have the best rig in the world, just a little Peavey practice amp. I almost always use the Conklin dry, straight through, it just doesn't sound right thru my DigiTech RP200. My complaints; The tuners suck, and the pickups are somewhat muddy sounding. I'm going to replace them eventually.

I'm thinking of stringing my 7 string with 9-42's but what gauge would you recomend the low B to be?
