Re: Yet another 7 string post...

I had one of the black/green Universes back when they first came out. That was a damn-nice guitar! In a way, it's too bad about the EMG-707, because I imagine it took a LOT of routing to get that to fit. I have no idea why EMG felt it necessary to put its 7-string pickup in such an inconvenient casing. I've played more recent Universes, and didn't care for the necks as much as that old one.

I just picked up a RR7 The neck on this thing is pretty sweet, I'm not crazy about the SD design pups, I'm gonna put some 707's in it.

I like the 707, but before you go through all that routing, you might want to try a Duncan Distortion 7. The Washburn I just got has one, and it's seriously EVIL.

Re: Yet another 7 string post...

I am more than happy with the distortion in my Greco 7. Good p'up - matches nice with a Jazz in the neck.
My soloist has EMG 707's - which are great.. but they can be overkill depending on what amp you use. I do have to set the presets on my ENGL less "hot" than I do for my other guitars when using this guitar.
The Tom Anderson 7 string pickups are great as well.. they are still made.. just not by Anderson.
http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Hardware/7stgpkups.htm
Seymour Duncan now is making Custom 7's... so they have almost the tone/response of a distortion, but with more lower output and more low end. I am thinking about trying one out.
And though I am not really a DiMarzio guy - their p'ups are great as well (in my Ibanez and my Moore)
Plenty of options available....

Hey thanks guys I was unaware that the 707's needed extra routing. I love EMG's & Duncans also I'm gonna have to do some research. I'm playing alot of Metal, Prog power metal & stuff like that, also some Jazz stuff with a friend of mine. I figured with all the effects we have been using EMG would be the way to go.

Thanks for the heads up You guys

I also love the Duncan Distortion-7!! I replaced the Duncan Design abortion in my Schecter A-7 Elite with a Distortion-7, and it now sounds every bit as good as my Soloist (which also has a Distortion in it). I was initially a little worried that the low-B string might be a little muddy, since the Distortion is a pretty powerful pickup--but no need to worry, it's a very balanced and juicy-sounding pickup, and the low-B is sufficiently tight but with lots of chunkiness. And best of all, you don't have to rout out anything to install it, unlike the 707.

Re: Yet another 7 string post...

Yeah, the 707s are PLENTY hot. I really think they're the best sounding EMG - they're warmer and more "natural" sounding.

Of course, I love the JB7 in my Soloist 7, but I've been very impressed by the Distortion7 so far. Even the DiMarzios aren't bad - I have a Blaze II in my H207. ($15 on evilBay!) Much better than the Duncan Design. (Yeah, like that needs to be said.)

Drake, I'd say a Distortion7 and Jazz7 combo would probably work very well as far as flexibility goes - I _love_ the Jazz7 as a neck pickup, the clean tones are awesome with the JB in the bridge and both pickups on. I'd imagine the Distortion would work just as well.

Wayniac, if we ever play together, we should bring them all. Just for the hell of it. Talk about a 7 string summit...

It was kinda cool last night, too, as the Lacuna Coil guys are using the LTD SC-607Bs. There were 7 strings a-plenty between us and them! Those things are actually pretty nice, too, and the low B has nice overtones - from the FOH, anyway - but sounds a little too much like a bass, to me.

Anybody played one of the new Schecter Blackjacks? The price is certainly right, and I'd be curious to hear if the slighly shorter scale (26") would give good overtones while still sounding like a guitar...

Re: Yet another 7 string post...

I second the Jazz7 for neck. I've got that paired with a Custom7 in my RG1527. I can get some really good straight rock tones out of that thing. Only thing is, it is not a very forgiving set up. I think that guitar is best for practicing picking technique because every mistake comes through. Tone-wise, it's a monster.

you guys seen the new EMG 81-7?
www.guitarpartsdepot.com

it's a custom order only and only available from them!

But it's supposed to be killer, more focused and tight, The emg 707 was apparently according tot he tech at EMG to be an 85/89 type sound.

Anyhow, I'm going tot ry both and see what fits better with my herbert.

I'm building a custom 7 string ironbird guitar right now and it's going to be a single hum, and it's going to be tuned to Bb so total fucking crushing insanity!

I'll post back when I get it all together.

But for passive pickups, I'm leaning more towards the duncan's I have dimarzio in my 7's but there is a livliness missing from them.

Yeah, the aforementioned LTD SC-607B has them in it. If you live and die by the 81 sound, it's probably the best choice.

I actually think the 707 is somewhere between the warmth of an 85 and bite of an 81, which is why I like it so much.
