I've heard good things about the Evolution 7, as well.

Re: Yet another 7 string post...

It's funny, I didn't really like 7-strings until recently. I had an early Ibanez Universe years ago, and I traded it in at a big loss because the low-B seemed unnecessary to the way I played at the time. Also, I didn't care for the feel of the wide neck that much. But I had been tuning my 6-strings down a lot in the last couple of years, so I figured that I might try a 7-string again. And now, I hardly pick up my 6-string Soloist anymore, which is a great guitar. I almost feel lost without the low-B string nowadays.

I'll probably set my Soloist down to 1.5 steps down tuning, which is nice for writing material that uses lots of open-string chords and such--creates something different than you can do on a 7-string.

I'm thinking of getting a Carvin, but I'm just not that fond of the Carvin tone anymore--they tend to be somewhat trebly/bright sounding. You can hear that on Tony MacAlpine's recent 7-string work with his Carvins.

But I may still give one a try, anyway. I suspect lots of mahogany in a Carvin (like the one on eBay) would help eliminate the bright sound.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, I was thinking they might be a little bright, especially with ebony. The maple/mahogany should do the trick - nice and warm, with some bite.

You could always order an all-mahogany one.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">While I've not played the Blaze pups, I thought the New 7s on my old RG 7620 were very good. I've read some reviews from quite a few people who thought they were better than the Blaze. I guess it's all personal opinion, though.

I prefer the feel of Carvin's maple boards over ebony for some reason. My SC90 has maple, and I love it. The DC400 and DC120 12-string I had were ebony and, while they were sweet players, I preferred the maple.

Now that my "adjustment period" is over, I pretty much can switch up whenever I want to. I used to think my friend Marcel Conen was a superior being because he could switch at will. (He's still a superior being, as far as playing goes, but that's not why. ) It's still a different instrument, though - for example, I find that dropped-D sounds MUCH better on a six-string. Dunno why, something about the harmonics.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Same with "Iommi tuning" (or C#/1.5 steps down). I suppose you could tune a 7-string down that far, but I can't imagine the low-B being very useful tuned down to G#. Also, if the bassist tuned down to match, his low-B (can't remember what it is in bass clef) would probably just create an indecipherable rumble tuned down that far!

I may get an ESP H-307 or MH-307 to try out the EMG pickups. I don't want to carve up another guitar to put them in. Actually, an MH-307 with a trem replacement to the new 7-string original Floyd would probably be a pretty cool machine!

I think Jeff Loomis tunes his guitars down a half-step, both the 6-strings and 7-strings, and his sound is pretty disctinct.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">We actually tune down a half step, too - 10s or 11s are pretty good in that tuning. If you dropped the Bb to Ab, though, it gets mushy - REAL fast.

Maybe if you use 12s or something.

Besides, EVERYTHING Loomis does is distinct.

A bassist would have to be using bridge cable for anything to come out tuned that low, though.

Of course, you could just buy the LTD SC-607 - the non-Baritone Stephen Carpenter. No Floyd, but EMG 81-7 pickups...
