Re: got another wolfgang

I own both and would definitely go with the EB. Much rounder pups, much lighter, and according to those who work on these, much better quality overall. Not to mention some pretty wacky overtones when you are playing....

I like the smaller frets too.
Spin the black circle.

Re: got another wolfgang

I have an EB/MM sihouette special (for sale, btw) and quality wise I can't tell a difference between the EB and the Peaveys. Zip, zilch. This doesn't mean the EB is poor quality, just that the Peavey is such HIGH quality. As far as my ''references' - I do my own fretwork, have refinished guitars, and have built from parts... I'm not Dan Erlewine but I can get the job done. The EB and the Peavey Wolfs are same quality imho as Jackson USA guitars, and that's saying a lot. As a matter of fact, my JCF01 guitar had more issues with it than any of the Wolfgangs I've owned.

I am thinking about picking up a used Wolfie. What are the differences in the models, i.e. Special, Standard, EXP?

Hey Wayniac,
I have an EBMM EVH, EBMM Axis and two of the Wolfgang standards. I would say that they are all equal in quality. They sound different but not bad or good, just different. The wolfie has more low end to it than my musicmans. I would not choose any one over the other except for I like archtops

I need to pick up a special one day. The lightness of them is more appealing now that I'm playing out more.

Fret, here you go
Standard
made in USA
Arch top
Trans and gold have maple top
Volume and tone
Neck angle differs from special, can't recall specs

Special
made in USA
flat top
volume only
same pick ups as standard
Eddie seems to use the special more near the end of VH 3 tour

EXP
Made in Korea ( AFAIK )
Cheaper version, with cheaper parts
Still a great little guitar

If you on a budget go with the Special, you can find them lightly used for a steal.

Re: got another wolfgang

Few things I'd like to add regarding the special vs the standards:

Standards have birdseye maple necks, the specials don't. However, some of the specials have some figuring to the fingerboard - check out the pic of mine at the top of the thread.

Standards also have a tiltback headstock like a Gibson. The specials aren't tilted, like a strat.

Standards have nice pearloid tuner buttons, specials have chrome.

The floyds seem to be the same (huge brass blocks too!) and the pickups are the same.

I think the specials are amazing bargains used if you keep your eyes open. They can be purchased under $500 all the time, which is around where the korean imports sell for new.

My Wolf Page w/ comparison to my Axis

Bottom line is I prefer the Axis, but the Wolf's a cool guitar. I don't buy into the "Peavey makes 'em as good as Ernie Ball" argument, however... I've yet to see a Wolfgang that can compete with Music Man guitars in the fit and finish department...

I have to respectfully disagree, but I currently have an Ernie Ball Silhouette Special and two wolfgangs... I don't see any real difference in the fit and finish, except the EB does have some nicer little touches (like the locking tuners and the clear gloss back of headstock, with the oiled neck). As far as paint quality, fretwork, etc... the Wolfs are as good as the EB, which is VERY good.

Maybe off the shelf there is a difference - I take most of my guitars apart and tweak the hell out of them, and both of my Wolfs were bought used and needed a little TLC. Oh well, this world would be boring if we all agreed on everything.

ive owned 2 wolfs now.

Still will say they have the nicest feeling neck out there period!!!!!!

I just wish Peavey would come out with a 24 fret neck thru model, then i'd be lovin it.

I've got to chime in here fellas.. To me, their is NO comparison between the Peavey and EBMM..

The AXIS KILLS the Peaveys on a more consitent basis.. It seems to me i have to sift through 4 or 5 Peaveys before I find one that feels like an old friend.

That is NEVER an issue with Ernie Balls.. They all play great and are soild as a rock with OUTSTANDING craftsmanship..

It is my second fav. neck ever built.. On the '84-'85 maple board banana head Barettas feel better(maybe because it is what the AXIS and Wolfie necks were modeled after-See EVH preferance)

I'm with Pete on the short body/neck combo too.. It just feels easier to get around the neck and the whole guitar itself is not as cumbersumb as most..

I prefer the Wolfie. My technique goes to hell with an Axis or MM EVH. The Peavey is just SO comfortable.
