Re: GMW - To logo or not to logo....

I personally would rather not have the GMW logo on the headstock as I just don't like their logo. I'd go nekked

I don't think there are any collector enthusiasm for GMW's, not serialized and no way to authenticate them, its a niche market for Charvel folks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">part of the way to get around the strathead issue is to not place a logo in the traditional logo placing area, from what i've heard.

i'll agree that their logo could use a makeover, though...

it's likely they pay a fee to use that shape too .. I'm just guessing on this one though
Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

A company's logo means a lot. You need to have something "eye catching" or memorable. Unless the company is established enough to be well recognized by hearing it's name...Fender, Gibson, Marshall, ect. Here on the forum, GMW is well known. But out in the rest of the world it isn't.

I've designed logo's for a lot of companies over the past 15 years. Some I like...some I don't. It's rare to see a company change it's logo out of the blue. New ownership is usually why a new logo is designed.

I think GMW's logo is fine. It's a little plain, and not super easy to read...but it's ok. Here is one I had fun with. I designed it for Scott:

This actually looks better in B&W. I was playing around with photoshop after I finished it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">not sure on that...usually with the licensing, you have to note that on the neck somewhere... like the 25th anniv stratheads that have the sticker on the back, or woodburned heels like other parts houses have to do.

I say get em' logo'd...they're killer guitars, no reason not to wave the GMW flag - unless you're trying to pass it off as something it's not.

I've got one in progress and another in the pipe that will be logo'd, as well as sending down the neck off my evilbay score to be logo'd...

a thought. If they started logoing all the guitars, they'd have a similar situation w/ threats of lawsuits for trademark infringement. Had Charvel never logo'd their guitars, I doubt Fender's threat back in the day would hold much water. I also doubt whether Fender could have done anything back then in the first place, but they did have powerful CBS lawyers at the time that could have made it cost prohibitive for Charvel to fight them. Fact is Charvel and Jackson was killing Fender in market perception, had they had the production facilities, they could have really dented into their market back then. Fender was aware of this and the deep pockets of CBS intimidated the small custom mfg that Jackson was at the time. In a truly just world, no way would fender have won in court. GMW doesn't want that kind of hassle for hte handful of guitars they make every year. Notice their website does not show the headstocks? It's called CYA.

I would have the GMW logos applied. The GMW name stands for quality and workmanship. Plus they have a solid history of satisfied customers.

One parts company was caught selling necks without the wood burned note on the bolt on area and had Fender pull the licensing for 6 months. They had a warehouse full of necks they couldn't even sell!

Re: GMW - To logo or not to logo....

I say no logo, as I don't like theirs. They seriously need a new logo, but if they're not going to get one (which is somewhat understandable, since they've built some recognition around the current one), they should at least reduce the size of the current one by about 50%. And yeah, like someone suggested above, filling it with MOP or something might make it look better. I'd say how about something unusual, though, e.g., brass? Like the brass rosette on the new Steve Vai Ibanez acoustic, which looks cool and unusual. A brass logo on the headstock would be unique and memorable (compared to a decal). Maybe the Photoshop wizards could mock something up?

                            Interesting (and not unexpected responces),

Anyway care to let me know what this threat has to do with USA Charvels?

Seems this is all about GMWs, which everyone knows makes a product which is totally separate and different from any Charvel ever made .

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I thought they ran a tight ship here.
