• Wow! I played a nice guitar tonight...

I was in one of the local used/vintage shops this evening with a buddy and we wanted to try a few pedals out. So I grabbed a gorgeous Gibson Les Paul Goldtop '56 Historic reissue. Wow! This is a wonderful guitar. It played like butta and the sound coming out of those P-90's were out of this world! Man, I got some GAS now!

BTW, the reason I grabbed it to begin with is because I had a '68 Deluxe years ago and have been missing it for a loooong time. I've been eyeballing these things for a while now and am very tempted...

Tim,

you have to start bring me around Seattle when i'm back, because i've never found any decent used gears when i was there.

yeah, you gotta love gold tops. i've toyed with the idea of p90s but haven't had enough experience with them to pull the trigger. i always thought that they looked quirky and cool.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Dude, these pickups are the shit! They sounded soooo fat. Awesome articulation too. They are just one big fat fucking coil of tone. I was playing it through a Dr. Z Maz 38. This guitar sounded great clean, crunchy, or dirty.

P-90's are awesome. The tone really is right between a regular single coil and a humbucker. Fatter and more midrangey than singles, clearer and a lot less forgiving than humbuckers. I'm trying to find some humbucker sized ones that have humbucker level output. A man can dream, can't he? A man can dream...

I put these in my PRS Santana III and they just kick ass. The Stock PRS pickups were thin and wimpy. The Phat Cats brought the guitar to life. These won't compete with EMGs but they hang with my more moderate output humbuckers.

I played a bad ass guitar today too. A PRS Swamp Ash Special full flamed maple w/ bird inlays. Very cool.

BM,
Have you tried the Gibson P-94? Supposed to be a p-90 in a hum package.

I bought a Gibson Les Paul Special in Cherry with dual p-90s for a friend (paying me back Friday - we'll see - maybe dave the repo man will drop by this weekend!). It was a flat top, but HEAVY. Sounds tough too. Can be found for around $600, but I don't think the p-90/p-100 model is being built any longer. Anyone with exp on the special models? It's no RI, but about $800+ cheaper.

if you like Humbucker sounds from a P-90 guitar, you can get the EMG 81/85 sized P-90s now. That would be cool. Jack.
