• Carvin Ultra V

Are these the regular King V shaped ones? Or the nasty backwards Rhoads ones?...
How much do these go for approximately?
Were they all ebony and unbound?
Are they any good?
Anyone got one to sell for cheap...?

Re: Carvin Ultra V

Carvin's Ultra V is the upsidedown/backwards Rhoads.
Price anywhere from $300 to $600 (I bought mine for $350)
Some have Kahler Pro trems, some Floyds
Unbound Ebony fingerboard, mostly dots, some w/block inlay, mostly come with the 'pointy' headstock, although some where with the Carvin 'arrowhead' 3 per side tuners (see links for picture references)
They play very well (like any other Carvin)
I don't like the sound of the Carvin M22 pickups

Re: Carvin Ultra V

The first couple of years of production in the late '80s, the Ultra V had rounded horns, and was basically just a V-220 (the X-shaped Carvin) with the two front horns cut off. You don't see those early ones on eBay very often.

In '88 (I believe), they converted it into the 'reverse Rhoads' look with the sharp horns and bevels. I wouldn't mind getting one, but Carvins always sound a bit 'bright' for my taste. The Carvins of that era have killer necks, however, so they are very tempting.

I'd love to get one of those, Ultra V or V220, doesn't matter which. Carvins are virtually impossible to get over here. There's a German dealer but his online store has been down for months now
I have a DC400, and it's a great guitar, but indeed rather trebly.

M22's sound good to me. Here's a clip I just recorded with my Ultra V--pickups are M22N (neck) for the first 18 seconds and M22SD (bridge) from then on (oh and please excuse any clams you may hear, this was just a one take improv done to make sure my new Mackie mixer worked):

Ultra V-->Carvin Quad X-Amp-->Carvin Power Amp-->Carvin Cabinets

This guitar is more versatile than it looks--part of the reason is that I have the pup's about 1/2" away from the strings so that it is not just a metal weapon:

Like Sancho said, they're pretty thin on the ground outside of the US, but they can be found.

"Nasty backwards Rhoads" - I quite like that!

AFAIK, there was no "King V" Carvin.

this is a stupid question, but i see V's with these things too, in that white V220 above in Jimbo's post, what Is that black plate on the bottom of the guitar underneath the volume control and bridge hum? and what the heck does it do??? the plate?

and Jimbo, what does the three mini toggles do?

Re: Carvin Ultra V

The plate is there so it is easier to play sitting down.It folds out and rests on your leg so you can play more like a strat shape. The mini toggle are most likely two coil splitting switches and phase switch.

As far as body shapes the one Jimbo posted was available for the first year only ,1987.After that they were all pointer like Robotechs and Snoogans. They lasted till 1993.
