Mmmm, other than the fact that it hasn't been well looked after, I'm not sure how you would come to the conclusion that it is a piece of crap. The headstock shape is identical to post "lawsuit" Aria Les Paul copies, and the diamond shaped inlay is one of the many different designs used by Aria over the years. Matsumoku made some great guitars over the years under many different brand names, and I have yet to play one that I would call crap, or even close to it. I currently own 4 Matsumoku era Aria Pros, and I love them all.

This was a recent total steal at a local pawnshop:

It's a (rather dark) wine red tokai LP custom; I think the serial number dates it to 1983. It's mahogany with a mahogany cap, so it's a bit dark; but with the right EQing it sounds beautiful, I _really_ like the pups (some sort of tokai PAF replicas)

Thanks man She's a total beauty, but could use a fret leveling/crowning; the action is set pretty high at the moment and I can't get it down much lower without some nasty buzzing. The way I see it, for this price even with a full-on refret would still make it a pretty good deal for a nice guitar

                      Re: Les Paul Lawsuits

I would stay away from the Cort stuff if I were you. A kid I knew had one, and I had to do a set up for him. It weighed a ton. It was by far the heaviest guitar I have ever held. The top was not carved, but was bent like an archtop, and when I pulled out the trem (it had one of those cheapo copies of the Kahler), you could see huge voids between the plywood body, and the thin plywood top. It took a great deal of work to get the thing to stay in tune.

                      It looked nice though.

This could be serious business. I saw on
[argh] Ed Trollman's site that Heritage is
stopping production on its LP-style gtrs.
Anyone know if this is on the level?

Yup, I still think that white one is an Aria. Here is another one with the same headstock shape, and the same headstock inlay.

I think Hohner & Aria has a good LP bolt on for the money. Ibanez is nice but expensive.

I HIGHLY reccommend El Degas Les Pauls if you can find one. Very rare. I have one, and it plays better than any Les Paul I've ever played, and its a bolt-on. Everybody who has played mine agrees.

                              More pics here

It has everything its supposed to... mahogany body, arched top, full binding, Grover tuners, Gibson-like inlays and bookshape headstock, finished neck, good paint, great pots and knobs, and came with real PAF pickups, which I've swapped out for some Dimarzios.

I had an El Degas SG copy. It was a great guitar. Nice neck profile, set neck, nice inlays, etc.. Unfortunately, I bought it new, and after 6 months, the neck began to twist. I ditched it before it got worse
