  • Did Gibson ever...

...make a Les Paul Custom with standard fret wire on it? I think it would be rad to have a Les Paul Custom with a neck and frets like a Studio.

I think so. AFAIK only certain years were "fretless wonders" - the 60s and some 80's and the reissues maybe? I think the 70's may have had a couple of fretless wonders (76?). Mine's got tall skinnys, but then, I've been informed that the fretboard may have been replaced.

I have never seen a custom with "standard size frets". All the ones I have seen had the typical low wide Gibson frets with that typical excellent Gibson crown profile.

Newc's right, only certain years were fretless wonders older late 60's/early 70's and like Newc said some reissues. I had a 77 that had normal Gibson fret wire and I have a 98 that has normal wire as well.

ACTUALLY...there were two Custom Models that had "standard" fret wire. Those were the Spotlight Edition (Black Hardware and factory EMG's), and the Custom Color Editions from the early 90's
I had one of each in the past, and had the bigger standard fretwire.

My '94 white LP Custom has thin frets with the binding over them. My '76 Explorer and '81 V have the low fat frets.

              Yeah Scott...
I had a '76 (from 1976) Explorer also, and mine had the low fat frets also. My LPC Lite has the skinny low frets like a typical Custom would have though.
