I've heard of them. Lower-end Japanese stuff from what I've seen and I think they even did some production in Korea, too. They did have a decent presence in the U.S. in the '80's from what I recall. I think one of Rod Stewart's guitarists (Robin LeMesieur?) was an endorsee.

Where they any good? Or just crap? Theres one in a local pawn shop that I picked up and played..It seemed nice but didnt know anything about the company..

From the ones that I saw, they were so-so for the money.

By the way, I believe that Trevor Rabin was another Westone endorsee, too.

All of that aside, if you liked the one that you played and you think it's a great deal, then do what makes you happy.

True, I put a down payment on one..its like a starish type bass..Creme with a red lightning bolt [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img] ..I can almost feel the hair bands looking down on me

Earlier Westones are made in the Matsumoku factory. Definitely not lower end. Check the neckplate. It should say Matsumoku on it and will have a serial number. The serial number will be something like: A81XXX or 81XXXX or 1XXXXX. These all denote a 1981 production year. Oddly enough they used all 3 serial number methods simultaneously. I have 4 Aria Pro II guitars from 81, 82, and 83, and they represent all 3 serial number types.

No, It looks like the Dimention IV bass..It did have that name on the neckplate because I mentioned something to my friend that it sounded like something honda would put it out. Although I dont remember the serial # but I think it was stamped on back the headstock..or burnt it? I think..I will check it out more when I go to put a payment on it..It seems to play really good..needs some new pots..very thick-thumpy bass sound in the neck humbucker and in the treble a very..jazz/peizo type sound..I really like it and it has a weird shape..If it isnt something super rare I think it would be cool to cut off the top horns and make it something like an RR...

I had an 85 Westone Pantera X-350 6 string guitar and it was a very nice high end model.Neck thru thick, curly maple top, contured body,2 alnico 5 humbuckers and a floyd (lic).Ebony finger board and MOP inlays.This model was the predesessor to the Trevor Rabin model in 86.

I had one from '86. A Spectrum FX that was neck thru. Hum-single-hum configuration. It was a pretty good guitar playing wise, not fantastic though. It was pretty well made construction-wise, but the hardware wasn't all that. It had a "Bendmaster Deluxe" tremolo which was single-locking, and the posts the trem sat on wouldn't intonate with a regular Floyd cos there were either too close or far away (can't remember which).

The stock pickups weren't all that either, and the guitar wasn't worth it to upgrade the pickups IMO. Also, the pickups all had some type of coil taps etc., so replacing them wouldv've been tricky. ..ended up trading it in, in the end.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure this one (spectrum FX) was made in Japan.
