They'll win...this dates from 1977 which shows they've been somewhat active in protecting their designs.

I for one love exact high quality copies of popular designs for a good price, so i feel the opposite about this. Jack.

Well Jack - You'll like this then...

Check this out:
80's Tokai LP Flametop

I've played the early ones, they smoke most Gibson Les Pauls, and I'm willing to bet this one kicks ass too!

there a couple of tokia copies at a place near me the SG is killer, the LP looked real nice didnt play it tho. the SG looked like a 61 reissue w/ no pickguard. natral mahogany & played real nice. fit finish real nice pickups were my only complaint & they werent that bad. im sure a set of grovers & duncan would have made it a killer SG.

I seem to recall reading that at one time Harley Davidson tried to trademark the sound of their bikes.

Re: Gibson vs. Tokai

The judge's decision against PRS is crapola--there is ZERO "initial interest confusion" between the PRS singlecut and the Les Paul, regardless of the intent of the people at PRS to cut into Gibson's market share by marketing a similar guitar.

Essentially, the judge is saying that any single cutaway solidbody is a trademark violation because people would mistakenly believe it was a Les Paul. That is just pure BS--I don't the judge really came to understand the mind of a high-end guitar buyer, and that would be the fault of PRS's lawyers. However, the decision could be appealed, and PRS would be fools not to.

Yup, the sound was 'potato - potato - potato' they were trying to patent.

I've played a few of the Tokai Love Rock models, and unless they make some that are a whole heck of a lot nicer than the ones I saw, I was thoroughly unimpressed - they felt cheep and sounded dull. Granted, there's good and bad guitars from every line, but given the high praise some have been heaping on them, I was expecting more. I wouldn't trade one of my Les Pauls for ten Love Rocks.
