The "Fretless Wonders" actually had thin, but incredibly low frets--barely above the fretboard itself. They were originally found on '50s Black Beauties, and then on some of the late '60s-early '70s LPC reissues. Personally, I find them almost unplayable. I know Al DiMeola used Fretless Wonder LPs in the '70s, but then he's never been a big string-bender. To me, the frets on those are so ridiculously low that the notes don't ring out with enough attack or precision--not to mention the difficulty of bending strings on those guitars.
The standard low-wide frets that Gibson used on almost all of its guitars through the mid-80s are a lot more substantial than the actual Fretless Wonder guitars. I loved the '60s-'80s Gibson frets and don't know why Gibson went to a higher, thinner fret in the '90s. Trying to imitate PRS, I guess.
