• Garage Sale Les Paul

OK, I picked this guitar up from a garage sale for a song.
This is a Gibson USA model, but I've never seen an exact model like this before.

ALL black
It is mahogany, but very thin and light body.
Two P100(?) black covered pickups
1 volume, 1 tone knob (black domes)
1 (neck?) pickup splitter switch - might have been added
black Grover tuners
black Tuneomatic bridge and black stop piece
24 fret rosewood fretboard on set neck with MOP dot inlays
No bindng
No pickguard
No pickup selector label ring
Gibson MOP logo, Les Paul model script on headstock.
Made in USA and serial number stamped on back of head.
Came with original Gibson USA plastic moulded case. Very cool and solid case.

At first I thought it was a gothic, but its not. Then I thought it was a Special, but its not. Then I thought it was a Special II, but I don't think so. All my research has turned up nothing that matches this guitar.

Anybody know?

Here are some pics:

It sounds and plays GREAT! I just want to find out what model it is, when it was made, and roughly what it is worth.

Any of you Les Paul gurus know before I join and try posting at the Les Paul forum?

I was reading the description and I was about to say that you found a completely custom made Gibson with 24 frets, but it only has 22 according to the pictures.

Its not like anything I've seen before which sorta has me leaning towards custom but by no means am I a Les Paul expert.

Doh! I meant to type 22 but typed 24.

I'll post the serial number later when I go home. I know it started with 80.

Late 80s? I was thinking early 80s.

That's very cool! I've never seen black covered minibubkers, or P-90s, P-100s, whatever they are, on a Gibson before.

It's terrible. I'll give you $300!

I'd call it a 'Gothic Custom Special"

It's not a slab that's a carved top, if that's true it ain't no special man plus you got no pickguard like a special.

I am never that lucky, you my friend have done well....

I recently sold a P-100 special in cherry and it was a great guitar but no carved top or black HW and had a pickguard.

Those were made in the late 80's It was a version of the Lp studio. They are pretty rare but not all that desired either. Cool Grab! How do the pickups onm those sound. They also made a version with the Steinberger bridge I think. Sweet deal for that price. i saw one sell on ebay for a few hundred more about a year ago.

the serial number works like this

YdddY

so 83113 stands for 1983 on the 311th day of that year i believe thats how they work it. the last numbers stand for the shop it was built in.

Regarding serial numbers, the one on my Studio is: 00304636. I sent an email to Gibson, and this was their reply.
"The first and fifth digits in the serial number match the year of production, making yours a 2004 model. Digits 2-4 indicate the numerical day of the year the serial number was stamped, in this case on Jan. 30, 2004."
