• The Gibson RD?

http://www.electricguitar.50megs.com..._rd_artist.htm

so what's up with this guitar, i barely see it... I even checked ebay and there were none in the past 3 months.. only a broken bass.

Seems rare?

Hasn't been quite that long on egay. Just last month, there were two RDs in natural and one solid black model. Two of the guitars were Customs and one was an Artist. Each seller wanted "stupid" money for them and the product descriptions were extremely vague, as if the seller really didn't know shite about the instruments.

The RD is a cool guitar, but by no means rare. Keep your eyes open, both on egay and at your local pawn shops. If you do spot one, check the guitar closely for counter-clockwise neck twist. This model, as well as the low end SGs, had a tendency to succumb to this ailment. Good Luck!

That's funny. I owned one and it seemed like a good guitar to me. I foolishly traded it off when I was just a teenager and have kicked myself repeatedly over the years over my stupid decision.

Re: The Gibson RD?

I lump them in with all that other 70s junk Gibson made in that era: Mauraders, S1, L6S, Sonex, Firebrand, Corvus....Its a shame that Gibson also made some excellent guitars during that period, but these monstrosities are what you see mostly. If you like them, buy it, but dont pay too much......
In fact, RDs were long forgotten until the grunge era, when guitar players also sought after Danelectros, Silvertones, and Univoxs. If that your bag, go for it, you wont get any competition from me in procuring those old things. One mans junk is another mans treasure..............

Why were they forgotten? What made them junk?

We had one at work for a while and it seemed pretty cool...it had those Les Paul Custom low-wide frets that I hate, but other than that it was actually a pretty comfortable guitar. We have a Marauder too that's been modded, I like that one too, except for the frets again.

Re: The Gibson RD?

I've actually found them to be quite good guitars - the build quality was the equal of anything else Gibson made at the time - that are just a little, well, weird.

Leave the active electronics off (or take them out), and they're pretty normal guitars, although with a love it or hate it shape. Start using the actives, however, and you'll discover some interesting - if not especially useful, at times - tones.

That is cool! If an Explorer and a Firebird were to f*ck... that would be its kid.

I had 2 Sonex 180's. They came with the Dirty Fingers zebra pickups. I thought they were pretty cool and sounded and played great.

You mention Dirty Finger pickups and my tech's eyes begin to glaze over. He's got three Explorers loaded with them and he swears there is no pickup made that barks, bites, and growls like a DF.
