• Chapman Stick and similar instruments?

Ok, there was a guy at NAMM with one of those Chapman Stick-type things. A Search of Ebay turns up one owned by the bassist from B.O.C., but that's it.
Anyone know where to find these things? What's the usual price?
Anyone seen one used going cheap?

You can find them for under a grand often enough. Lots of guys like you get curious about them but then find out they can't play them

I know the bassist for Kajagoogoo (Too Shyee Shy) Nick Beggs has done some recordings and seminars - he's pretty good - the music is a little New Age sounding at times.

Well, I'd like to give one a try anyway. Seems to me the hardest part is using your picking hand as a fretting hand. I found a Megatar on Ebay and the guy had a better description, and he said the strings are tuned in fifths I believe?
Anyhoo, I'd experiment with the tuning to get it to match standard guitar/bass tuning, put a Floyd on the guitar side, some EMGs, and split the stereo output to two amps and see if I can play both the guitar and bass parts of The Trooper at the same time
Or Peace Sells

Man, that'd kick all ass

And sadly, I remember Kakapoopoo - was that George Lynch on vocals, or just his hair?

Re: Chapman Stick and similar instruments?

There is a Chapman Stick player and demonstration player named Steve Adelson that I hung out with a couple days last year. He was really good and made playing it look so simple. He used a midi pickup on it to really do some cool stuff. The action is so low no regular guitar comes close. The frets are also large metal dowels, so hitting those notes takes a very light touch.

Chapman sends this guy to demo the instruments. Maybe you should call the company and see where they will have demos in the future so you can go and check one out in person. They bring one that people can try.

My friend new someone who had one. I got to try it out. It would have been cool if I knew what I was doing. I spent more time scratching my head than anything else. It was pretty cool. I'm sure it would be fun to have. The dude who owned it was a bass player and he did a lot of taps. He was pretty good at it.

My teacher plays Warr Guitars and is actually selling one now. I am not sure if it is 12 or 14 string or what, but it is sick. It is expensive though. Email if you are interested. they are like the Chapman Stick, but they have bodies. Very nice instruments.

I toyed with the idea of getting a Stick. I still think about it occasionaly. But I have a double neck now and it has more than enough strings.
