• Suhr Guitars

So after playing the Tyler guitar today (see http://www.jcfonline.com/ubbthreads/...part=1#291971), I tried out a Suhr strat style guitar. The guy made a point of saying it's the best bolt-on guitar made. Period. Yikes! That's a tall order! I mentioned that I had a Grosh and he sort of shrugged and said they used to carry them. Then some customer that apparently hangs out there a lot says I will be getting my checkbook out. The sales dude proceeds to tell me how the Suhr pickups will smoke the Fralins in my Grosh. At this point, my expectations are very high. So he pulls one down and I play it through the Carr amp. Pretty nice. Fretwork is very good. Not as good as my Grosh but very good. The guitar sounds good. Particularly after playing that Tyler. The Suhr pickups were not bad but the bridge and neck pickup tones were fairly dull. The 2/3/4 positions were nice though. The neck felt fairly nice - good Fender "C" clone. Good satin finish - not as smooth as it could have been though. It was a good guitar for sure but it's a $1000 guitar tops - not a $2200 guitar. It simply wasn't anywhere near spectacular. I have to say this Suhr was nowhere near in the same league as my Grosh. The Fender Custom Shop Strat I had was nicer than this Suhr too.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Re: Suhr Guitars

After reading an article about Suhr guitars, I felt compelled to locate one and give it a whirl. Matter of fact, I was able to try three different guitars. First off, the workmanship was top notch on one of the models, average on the second guitar, and the third had several problems. My first though was that I had taken a wrong turn and ended up at a Gibson dealer.

Honestly, for the price, I was not that impressed. There is no doubt in my mind that Suhr is no different than any other company in that some of their products are "hit and miss." I'm still gonna keep my eyes open for that "special one" at the right price.

thats sad. back in the late 80's i had a couple of Suhr parts 2 necks & a body. awesome stuff. the fretwork on those necks was almost perfect.

Your recent stuff are crap!

That is ok because it is not easy to please everyone.
For example, Many folks here dig Janet Jackson's tits and I don't.

I dunno dude, I have blues specials in my Grosh and a set of stock Tele pickups in a USACG/Fender partscaster and they sound really good to me.

Re: Suhr Guitars

To be clear, I only played one - not a bunch. I'm not passing judgement on Suhr in general here by any means (I think I was pretty clear by saying "this Suhr" each time). I was just relaying an experience. It was my first time playing a Suhr. I'm also not asserting that Grosh or Fender CS guitars are better or worse or anything like that. Again I was referring to specific guitars. I've played some less than stellar Grosh and Fender CS guitars.

Also, that Suhr I played needed to be tweaked. Most signifcantly I think the neck had too much relief - a small turn of the trussrod would have helped that guitar. I am very curious to try a few more to get a better sense of the guitars.

Then next time you have chance to go back there if soon, talk to Dave and ask "hey! where is Toru's Suhr?"
Play mine.
I am about to finish paying my Suhr from there.
Maybe you could play mine before they ship her to me.
It was built to my specs.

That'd be cool. What are the specs for your guitar? Is it there?

BTW, the guy working there was really cool. They handle the instruments very well. They wipe them down before hanging them up (or maybe it was just because I'm a big long haired scumbag lookin' person). They keep the place really nice. And the amp selection is $@%$#@%# nuts! Two Rocks, Carrs, Egnator, etc. One of my next trips there will definitely be to try some of those amps.

I definitely would like to play some more Suhr's and some of the Anderson's they have - I've only played a couple Anderson's before and that was years ago so I really have no experience with them.
