They are ok.
I had several in 90 or 91.
I recommend you to go to a Guitar Center and try one.
The body is so thin and if you get used to play your LP,it will be very different.
If you are thinking of buying obne, buy the 540SLTD with shark inlays.
Used ones usually sell for $400-500 and they are great.

And if you watch ebay enough, you can get them for even less! Search for "Ibanez Custom" as well as the model name. Many of the later S540 variations have a "Custom Made" inlay at the 21 fret, so many people list them as "Custom" or "Custom Shop" guitars.
By the way, I had several version of S series and I was a huge fan of Alex Skolnick(Testament) at the time in 89-92.

i have an 87 S540 (i'm playing right now). i bought it new, and it has been the ONLY guitar i've kept that long. plays great, sounds great. get an older one, though, because they were made in japan and are waaayyy better quality than the new ones. mine is all mahogany, with the wizard neck, original edge trem, the backstop system and IBZ/USA pickups (HSS). it is great!!
GEAR:
some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!
some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!
and finally....
i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!
the reason why i asked was because my favorite band guitarist was selling his on ebay and i'm a big fan. he used the guitar to record their first real album.
