Re: \'59 flametop les paul standard

In 6 years of working in a vintage geetar shop, I've had the distinct pleasure of playing one each a '58/'59/and '60
The '59 was the nicest looking, playing and sounding out of the 3....broad 3D flames!!! Broke my heart to put her down, but the $60,000.00 price tag was scaring me a bit!

I almost bought a '59 "bastardized" burst for $5000.00 about 6 years ago. It needed a lot of TLC (similar to the one Jim talks about in this thread).

the sawed in half one-

I think Gibson did this to get rid of their "imperfect bodies". Luckily guys everynow and then find the pieces and put it together. i think Gibson completely trashes them now, so yoiu can't put them together.

I think Will Ray has a Futura reissue that was sawed in half too, and put together.

This was a good guitar once upon a time. You are thinking of post 80's methods of disposing of seconds (they used to sell the seconds and just stamp a 2 on the back of the headtsock), where they used a chainsaw to cut the bodies in half.

Hey Fruitbat -

You may not want any steenking reissues - but this one is out of this world - a Custom Shop R9K - the "K" is for "Killer Top" and only a few were made:

Currently on evilbay - dude only wants $5500 for it...Toru, are you out there

There is one at the GC in Falls Church, VA that has a top at least as nice as that for $4500.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Re: \'59 flametop les paul standard

I don't have one but know of one locally that the owner has kept under his bed (really) since the early 70's when he purchased it for $2300. I've been working on that one for over 10 years.

I also narrowly missed an original owner '59 in northern Michigan that sold about 10 years ago. Got to give it a workout once about 15 years ago and tried to get the owner to sell it for several years. He ended up selling it way too cheap w/o calling me. Playing it was like an out of body experience. I can still remember the smell in the room, feel of the neck, etc. You never forget your first time

Never have. I have played a few though. I have some pics around here somewhere of one that was at the repair school I went to that would break your heart....

Hey Jim

I see you mentiond repair school and then mentioned "Bryan" in another post. By chance did you go to Bryan Galloup's school? I work in Big Rapids and have known Bryan since the mid 80's (I'm a "Quinns Music alumni"). His band played at my wedding and we go back to when he was Dan E's apprentice at the shop in the alley in B.R. He's a very talented luthier and has one of the best luthiery schools in the country.

Yes Larry. I went there in '94. Bryan wanted me to be his apprentice. A bad car accident prevented that from happening. I loved that area and have thought about going back someday for a visit.

I wish I could go back to early 60's by time machine and grab everything I could and come back.
I could be a very rich guy with a huge house by the beach.
