• Les Paul neck question

How thin is the '60s slim profile neck compared to the rounded '59 neck profile? My Studio has the '59 which I really dig, but I'm just curious what the thinner profile is like. I think every LP I've tried has had the rounder neck shape.

Steve (Speed Monkey) should be here to tell you how he feels.

The 60s neck is thinner and a little flatter in the backshape than the 50s neck, but not so much so as a Jackson or an Ibanez or anything. I've noticed that Gibson is kind of inconsistent with the neck shapes-two 50s necks don't feel totally the same as eachother like, say, two PRS Wide-fat necks will.

I had a LP mStd with a 60s neck. I got it by thinking I'd like a thinner neck cause I was mainly playing Jacksons. But on a LP I hated the thinner neck, it was a great guitar but I couldn't play it for sh1t. Then I tried a Std. with the 50s neck and its awesome, some days I can play it better than my Jacksons. Anyway I got rid of the 60s one and kept the 50s. Great guitar. And BTW they're both 2002 models for comparison's sake

Never played an SG, Jamie, but I should check one out. Thanks for the heads up.

Toejam, I dont know if it makes a difference now or not but I had the same problem with LP's that Blindmuddy had. I had an 88' custom and an 01'std that I hated! I now have a 57' RI goldtop that is to die for. While I dont normally espouse the "fat neck" position, on LP's it works!

Yeah, it does work on an LP. I always could switch between guitars with thinner necks and thicker necks, but I seem to prefer the thicker neck of my LP lately. My Hamer, Fender and Jackson JJP also have slightly round/thick necks, too, that I like. When going back to my Carvin or Dinky, I seem to get more hand fatigue lately (mainly my Dinky since it's the thinnest). I never had that problem on thin necks before, but I guess since I'm more used to thicker ones now and play them more often, the thinner ones give me a little problem and don't feel as good to me.

You should try one of Classic 60 Les Pauls at your local guitar store.

Yeah, I really should. Next time I'm in GC or another local shop, I'll check one out. I hate GC and hardly ever try anything in that place, though.

The 60's slim neck on my Classic is just right. It's not too slim and not too fat, but it is rounded, just not as thick as the '59 style.
