  • Played a Petrucci music man yesterday

Wow, the first time I played one, which was about a year ago, they really seemed kinda cheap, strange but true. Well I guess I got my head outa my ass, because I played one yesterday and it rocked! The tremelo on it was possibly the greatest aspect, and one of the best trems I have played! The only bad thing to me was the neck size, I am used to model series necks. Does anyone have one of these? Share some info/pics if so!

I've never played one, but I've heard great things. What's the neck size like and what is the nut width?

I really want a Petrucci with a piezo pickup in it. I've played about 4 different Petruccis and almost bought one. The only thing that kept me from buying it was the color: it was some ugly, puke yellow. Love to have one in Mstic Dream finish with a mathcing head. Great necks on these!

I'm up in the air about these. I've played a couple, but they were both at GC and were set up horribly. The neck was comfortable and the pickups were quite clear. It was a bit thin sounding to me, but then again, if I strung it up with 11's like I normally do, that would probably beef it up just the right amount.

The best thing about it was the forearm contour. That thing is cut out just the right amount and at just the right angle. It was probably the most comfortable guitar my picking hand has ever been on.

Cool. I've been interested in possibly the 7-string version. The thing that I'm kinda in the air about is the (b)asswood body. Not really a big fan of that type of wood, but I did have an Ibanez RG7620 that was kinda neat. The tone didn't do much for me, but it was an okay playing guitar.

Basswood guitars can differ radically in tone. My RG7620 has a very different tone than my RG620x, even though they are both basswood-bodied Ibanez RG guitars. I suspect that the EB/MM Petruccis use very carefully chosen pieces of basswood to get a nice tone--similarly to the Ibanez JEMs. It's funny, basswood can sound very good or very bad, but rarely anything in between. I'm lucky that I like having the difference in tone between my two RGs.

The one Petrucci guitar I played I loved--I thought it had an awesome neck--a bit bigger than an Ibanez Wizard, but not nearly as big as the neck you'd find on a neckthru Jackson.

Haven't tried one yet. They look pretty cool. I'd prabably opt for the 7 string myself. Not a huge basswood fan though. I'm sure it would sound better than my Universe (plays great, sounds not to great) The Petrucci body looks shaped for comfort. From what some of you are saying, mabey I should find somewhere that has one so I can check it out.

I owned the moterload one with the Piezo JP Inlays Matching headstock Mystic Dream etc... I wasn't a huge fan of the Mystic Dream but man this was a fantastic guitar. I want a 7 with Piezo.

This guitar sounded fantastic with my Tremoverb (go figure) it was just perfect with a Mesa product IMO I didn't like really anyother guitar as much with my Tremo. Sure the tone wasn't like an R9 les paul still it did it's job

Re: Played a Petrucci music man yesterday

I have the regular JP-6 in Pearl Red Burst.

Its a great guitar but the neck took me a little time to get used to as it feels really thin but its actually 19mm @ 1st fret. The fretboard radius is very flat & the neck shape is slightly asymetrical. Its more ( than U shapred.

I prefer Basswood guitars so this guitar fits my setup great. The sound is dark & it has lots of sustain for a Basswood guitar. To my ears the pickups sound very scooped but get great harmonics. The concave picking arm rest also took some getting used to but now I do not even notice it.

If you pick one up check for neck pocket stress/finish cracks. The older JPMs including mine suffer from this. Its minor & EB MM usually will usually get a new body for you if you send your guitar in.

I have some pics. in Yahoo! Photos here:

Re: Played a Petrucci music man yesterday

I've got one in Radiance Red. After trying one out at Guitar Center I just had to have one... the neck felt too darn comfortable. It is my second favorite neck behind my Caparison, fairly thin but slightly on the wide side. I have small hands and the sucker just fit perfectly. The neck is less beefy then the one on my WR1, but the WR1 also feels a bit more solid overall. I would say the JP would suit me for faster playing. The JP's fretwork is also great.

As for the pickups/sounds, the pickups are definitely not very high output. I tested the guitar at Guitar Center with a tube amp and at home I am playing it through a Marshall TSL... the guitar sounds great through tube amps. I get the impression that the guitar gets a lot of its sounds/flavor from the amp you play it through. Play it through a crappy solid state and it will probably sound bad, play it through a good tube amp and it will sound good. I am guessing that is due to the combination of the basswood body and the "custom" pickups.

The trem stays in tune great and I do not miss a locking nut at all. The arm contour really does put your arm in a comfortable position... it feels like you can trem pick for hours without getting tired.
