  • And you thought Dean invented the "V" headstock!

Way back when, I was obsessed with vintage Danelectros. Ended up with close to 150 guitars/basses. This was a one-off prototype 12 string Guitarlin built in 1958. The headstock was HUGE. 31 fret neck, Factory purple/creme sunburst, matching painted pickguard, and the horns cut like flames. It was a sight to behold....

Until the pics become available, Dean is still the official company which came up with the V shape headstock.

Yes...Gibson offically invented the "V" headstock. It was on the prototypes for both the Explorer (Futura) and the Flying V and also a small handfull of production V's and Explorers. Another interesting tidbit of info...when the V was on the sketchboard at Gibson in late 1956, it started out as something resembling a "Balalaika" (sp?)...(remember the "Gorky Park" Kramer guitars from the 80's?) Ted McCarty told the design engineer who was working on the project to cut the back out of it, and thus the "V" as we know it and love it was born.
I know the pic is small...but you can see it pretty clearly.
